A COMPASS WITHOUT NORTH

“In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.”
— Judges 21:25 (ESV)

Picture a group ride where every rider chooses which side of the road feels right. One rides right, another rides left, and someone treats every stoplight as a suggestion.
That is not freedom. It is a pileup waiting to happen.
A compass works because north stays fixed. It does not ask what feels true; it shows us where we are and points us home.
Our culture says everyone can choose their own truth. But if right and wrong are only opinions, then cruelty is not evil—it is merely unpopular. Some things remain wrong regardless of who approves, who votes, or how the law changes.
God is our true north. Right and wrong are rooted in His holy, just, loving, and unchanging character. His boundaries are not chains; they are guardrails beside a cliff.
But believers must allow truth to judge us first. We cannot condemn another person’s sin while giving our own sin a softer name.
We have all taken wrong turns. Jesus did more than point out the road—He came to rescue us. At the cross, He carried our guilt. Through His resurrection, He opened the road home.
Grace does not erase truth. Grace forgives us and changes us.

Father, realign our hearts with Your Word. Help us speak truth with humility, mercy, and courage. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

A shortened version of the message for this morning at Triple Tree Biker Church. We are working our way through the book of Jeremiah.
Chapters 2 and 3

THE ULTIMATE U-TURN
Finding Living Water on a Dead-End Road (Jeremiah 2 & 3 - ESV)
1. Hook: The Broken Fuel Gauge
Ever tried to push a 700-pound motorcycle down the highway because you thought you could squeeze another ten miles out of an empty tank? I have. It’s not a majestic look. You’re sweating, cursing your life choices, and cars are passing you by while people grin at your misery.
We all like to pretend we’ve got it all together. We paint the bike, polish the chrome, and act like we’re completely self-sufficient. But deep down? A lot of us are coasting on fumes, praying nobody notices our fuel light has been blinking for the last fifty miles.
Who are we really fooling here?
2. The Problem: Digging Leaky Wells
God catches up with His people in Jeremiah chapter 2, and He doesn't use fancy, complicated language. He lays it out plain and simple. Listen to Jeremiah 2:13 in the ESV:
'...for my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, and hewed out cisterns for themselves, broken cisterns that can hold no water.'
Think about that. God says He’s an endless, cold spring of mountain water. But instead of drinking from the spring for free, we decide to sweat, grab a shovel, and dig our own backyard mud holes. And to make it worse, the buckets we use are completely cracked.
What's your cracked bucket? Is it the bottle? Is it chasing money until your back breaks? Is it trying to look tougher than everyone else so nobody sees how tired you are? How’s that working out for you? Does it actually fill you up, or are you just digging a deeper hole?
3. The Confrontation: The Exhaustion of the Road
Jeremiah 2:25 gives us another reality check. The people say, 'It is hopeless, for I have loved foreigners, and after them I will go.'
Translation: 'I’ve already messed up too many times. I'm too far down this road to turn back now. This is just who I am.'
We've all been there. You look at your past, your mistakes, or your broken relationships, and you think, 'Why even bother changing?' You keep riding a bad route just because you're stubborn. But let me tell you something: there is no pride in riding a broken machine straight off a cliff just to prove a point.
4. The Grace: Pulling a U-Turn
Here’s where it gets incredibly personal. God doesn't write us off. In Jeremiah 3:22, He shouts across the highway:
'Return, O faithless sons; I will heal your faithlessness.'
Notice He doesn't say, 'Fix your bike, clean up your act, pay your fines, and then maybe I'll let you talk to me.' He says, 'Just turn around. Bring me your broken parts, and I will fix them.'
In the biker world, turning around on a narrow road can be tricky. But in God’s world, a U-turn is instantaneous. It starts with dropping the fake front, putting the kickstand down, and admitting we need help.
5. The Wrap-Up: Hit the Brakes
So, what's the play today? Are you going to keep digging holes in the dirt with a broken bucket? Or are you ready to pull over and take a drink from the spring that never runs dry?
Let's stop running on empty. Let's head home.

PRIDE, PROCRASTINATION & REGRET
JAMES 4:13 - 17
Three things can quietly wreck a man’s life:
Pride says, “I’ve got this.”
Procrastination says, “I’ll do it tomorrow.”
Regret says, “I wish I had.”
James 4:14 says:
“Yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes.”
We make plans like tomorrow belongs to us.
Tomorrow I’ll apologize.
Tomorrow I’ll make the call.
Tomorrow I’ll forgive.
Tomorrow I’ll get serious about God.
Tomorrow I’ll ask for help.
But none of us are promised tomorrow.
Pride tells us we don’t need anybody. Procrastination tells us there’s plenty of time. Then regret shows up when the opportunity is gone.
Every biker understands the rearview mirror.
You check it, but you don’t ride by staring into it.
Your past should teach you, not control you.
If you messed up, repent.
If you hurt someone, make it right.
If you need help, ask.
If God has already shown you the next right thing to do, do it today.
You cannot ride today’s road staring at yesterday’s wreck.
Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow belongs to God. Today is where obedience happens.

STAY OUT OF BOTH DITCHES
Hebrews 12:14 Pursue peace with everyone, and holiness—without it no one will see the Lord.
THE TWO DITCHES
When you are riding down the road, there is a ditch on both sides. Drift too far either way and both can wreck you. The enemy works the same way with grace.
One ditch is presumption. It says, “God understands. Everybody does it. I will get serious someday.” That kind of thinking turns grace into permission to keep sinning. But Jesus did not die so we could become comfortable with the sin that nailed Him to the cross. Grace means He paid the price we could never pay so we could be forgiven, changed, and set free.
The other ditch is despair. It says, “I have gone too far. I knew better. God forgave me before, but I failed again.” That voice may sound humble, but it is still a lie. Presumption says, “I do not need to repent.” Despair says, “There is no use repenting.” Both keep us from coming honestly to Jesus.
THE CENTER OF THE ROAD
The truth is in the center: sin is serious, and the mercy of Jesus is greater. We do not excuse our sin, and we do not hide from our Savior. We admit the truth, turn around, and come to the cross.
"A man can be too proud to admit he needs mercy, and too ashamed to believe mercy is for him. The chains of Pride and Fear keep him away from the cross." - Rev
ROAD CHECK
Which ditch are you closest to today? Are you excusing something God told you to leave behind, or believing you are too far gone to come back? Name it honestly before God.
Psalm 77: 1 - 3
1 I cry aloud to God,
aloud to God, and he will hear me.
2 In the day of my trouble I seek the Lord;
in the night my hand is stretched out without wearying;
my soul refuses to be comforted.
3 When I remember God, I moan;
when I meditate, my spirit faints. Selah

PRAYER
Father, keep me from treating Your grace carelessly, and keep me from believing my failure is greater than Your mercy. Help me face my sin honestly, trust Jesus completely, and walk the center of the road with You today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

This morning at Triple Tree Motorcycle Ministries BIKER CHURCH we are breaking down the book of Jeremiah into bite size wisdom. Chapter 1: 1-19
"An idol is not only a little statue. An idol is anything we love, trust, fear, or obey more than God. A
bike is a gift, but it makes a poor god. A brotherhood is a gift, but it makes a poor god. Money, s*x,
power, anger, a flag, a family name, a ministry, or even pain can take God’s place in a man’s heart.
We build things with our hands. Then the thing we built starts telling us who we are. We protect it
at any cost. We fear losing it more than we fear losing our walk with God. The gift becomes the
boss. That is an idol.
A good rider pays attention to warning lights. If the oil light comes on, black tape over the light
will not fix the motor. If the brother in front points to gravel in the curve, speeding up is not
courage. It is foolish. A warning is mercy when danger is real."

WHEN THE SEASON CHANGES
Devotions Saturday August 29, 2026

Finding Hope in the Harvest and the Road Ahead
Ecclesiastes 3:1
“For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.”
You can feel autumn coming before you really see it.
The evenings get shorter. The mornings have a cooler edge. School buses are back on the road. The corn begins drying down, and soon our Pennsylvania roads will be covered with red, orange, and gold.
For some of us, that sounds pretty good. Cooler weather. Fall rides. Benefit runs. Campfires.
But for somebody else, the end of summer can hurt.
Maybe you lost someone this year. Maybe you are fighting hard to stay sober. Maybe another summer passed and you thought your life would be farther along by now.
Ecclesiastes reminds us:
“For everything there is a season.”
God never promised that one season would last forever.
There is “a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance” (Ecclesiastes 3:4).
Scripture does not tell you to pretend you are okay. If you miss somebody, miss them. If recovery is hard today, admit that it is hard.
But mourning is not the only season God mentions.
Weeping is followed by laughter.
Mourning is followed by dancing.
The Bible gives us room to hurt without telling us we have to live there forever.
Autumn also means harvest.
Galatians 6:9 says:
“And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.”
Maybe your harvest right now does not look impressive to anybody else.
Maybe your victory is that you made it through another day sober.
You got out of bed. You called somebody instead of isolating. You prayed again. You apologized.
You forgave. You simply kept going.
Do not underestimate small signs of life.
A biker understands changing conditions. You can leave home under blue skies and an hour later be riding through cold rain. You change your speed. Adjust your gear. Tighten your jacket.
The weather changed, but the destination did not disappear.
Life can be like that.
One season may have taken something from you that you never expected to lose. Another may have exposed something in your life that needed to change.
But a changed season does not mean God abandoned the ride.
Isaiah 43:19 says:
“Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?”
We tend to use January as the point of new beginnings.
It is NOT the only point of new beginnings.
God says His mercies are “22 The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; 23 they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” (Lamentations 3:22-23).
August can be a beginning. September can be a beginning. Tomorrow morning can be a beginning.
So as summer fades, instead of only saying,
“There goes another summer,” maybe say, “God brought me through another season.”
“Positive Forward Motion” can be a minute an hour or day. Just keep moving.
There is still seed to plant. People to love. Good to do. Miles to ride. Prayers to pray.
And a Savior worth following.

“A changing season is not the end of the road. Sometimes it is God’s way of reminding you there is still a road ahead.” - Rev

Prayer
Father, thank You for being faithful in every season. Help us grieve what we have lost without losing hope in what You are still doing. Give strength to the person fighting for another sober day, comfort the one carrying an empty place in their heart, and courage to the one who feels stuck. Help us learn from yesterday without living in the rearview mirror. Fix our eyes on Jesus and give us faith for the road ahead. Thank You that Your mercies are new every morning. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
