The first-time convention grant is your chance to attend the fall JEA/NSPA National High School Journalism Convention in Orlando — at no cost! This scholarship is designed for advisers attending their first convention and includes waived registration, free lodging at the convention hotel, participation in the JEA Outreach Academy, a ticket to the Saturday adviser luncheon and one year of JEA membership. Two students per adviser are also included in the grant and will receive waived registration, free lodging, access to a pre-convention workshop, entry into on-site contests, a free NSPA publication critique and one free entry in NSPA’s Best of Show. Applications are due Friday, Sept. 4! Don’t miss out!

The Outreach Academy is a free, intensive seminar for new media advisers who need help teaching and advising students in journalism with a strong emphasis on promoting diversity.

The hands-on diversity training session takes place on Thursday, Nov. 19, during the JEA/NSPA National High School Journalism Convention in Orlando.

Topics include:
Discussions of teaching journalism to diverse populations
Diversifying school coverage
Engaging your staff and school community
Understanding the resources and organizations ready to help advisers

You are invited to participate in this free seminar as a teacher with five or fewer years of advising experience. Priority will be given to advisers teaching in schools traditionally under-represented in JEA membership — especially low-income, urban and rural schools.

Applications are due Friday, Sept. 18. Advisers accepted into the program will be notified by Sept. 28 so they can make any travel plans and register for the convention.

JEA has named Laura Widmer, executive director of the National Scholastic Press Association and Associated Collegiate Press, as the recipient of the 2026 Carl Towley Award.

This award is JEA's highest honor and is presented to a member whose work is unusually beneficial and of superior value to the national JEA and to scholastic journalism.

JEA is now seeking volunteers to facilitate the National Student Media Contests at the JEA/NSPA National High School Journalism Convention in Orlando this November. This opportunity is open to advisers, teachers, chaperones and local journalism professionals.

Opportunities are available both on site and ahead of the convention, with many roles that require no specialized expertise, just a willingness to help.

The majority of volunteers are needed Friday, Nov. 20, to supervise contest rooms and judge entries. On-site judging will take place Friday evening with dinner provided.
