Design+Make at Kansas State University

Design+Make at Kansas State University Louis (Fall 2025). El Dorado has taught a fifth year studio at Kansas State University since 2011.

Design+Make is a collaborative enterprise between El Dorado partner emeritus David Dowell and graduate architecture students at Kansas State University and Washington University in St. This year’s Design+Make Studio: Ways of Seeing, is focused on the Little Jerusalem Badlands near Oakley, KS, and The Bank in Matfield Green, KS. In this Capstone Graduate Architecture Studio we will explore what it

means to create and rehabilitate facilities that assist in the rapid orientation of visitors, and in the forging of community around deceptively complex characteristics of place that make each of our project sites noteworthy on a global scale.

In Dialogue

From the Eames Institute, where Jennifer was recently named one of their Curious 100, a celebration of 100 courageous leaders and creative minds across the US who are harnessing the transformative power of curiosity to address today’s most pressing problems and shape the cultural conversations that define our moment:

“Jennifer Devlin-Herbert, a nationally recognized architect, is CEO and principal of EHDD, the San Francisco–based firm honored as AIA National Firm of the Year. For over 20 years, she has led nearly 30 projects for institutions like museums, aquariums, including the Kansas City Zoo Aquarium, universities, and libraries, rooted in the public good and committed to ambitious sustainability goals.

As EHDD’s first female CEO, Jennifer found a natural home for her belief that design excellence and civic impact are inseparable. A graduate of UC Berkeley, where she has also taught, she frequently serves on national design juries and continues to champion architecture as a vehicle for connection and belonging.”

Spring Hootenanny in MHK!

This past week we hosted the first Spring Hootenanny at APDesign in Manhattan, celebrating graduate students’ work on a new meeting place for The Land Institute and a new home for artists run by artists for Kansas City Artists Coalition. Both involved upcycling existing buildings and Bonafide stakeholders.

Special thanks to our clients who journeyed to Manhattan from Kansas City and Salina, Kansas – Rachel Stroer, Tiffany Durr and Tracie Thomas from TLI and Courtney Wasson from KCAC. Thanks also to our gaggle of insightful architects – Dan Maginn from Dake Wells Architecture, Doug Stockman from Helix Architecture + Design, Elvis Achepohl from BNIM, Quint Redmond from APD and Nick Kratz from JE Dunn. Caitlin Taylor from Midcourse Design delivered an inspired lecture and spent the day with us sharing her unique insights as an architect / farmer / educator.

We look forward to continued dialogue with all of these folks as we march towards final reviews in early May.

Thank you, KCUR 89.3.

Kansas farmers have faced significant challenges due to the Trump administration’s tariffs, which drove up equipment costs and caused crop prices to fall. The Kansas Farmer’s Union says the tariffs contributed to the closure of hundreds of farms and added stress to an already unpredictable indus...
