What an incredible Grind & Growth Workshop! šŸŽ‰

Our latest session was one of our best yet, bringing together a full room of entrepreneurs, nonprofit leaders, and changemakers eager to strengthen their grant-writing knowledge and funding strategies.

A huge thank you to Dr. Sarah Barrett, Vice President for Impact Strategy & Grant Programs at the Greater Manhattan Community Foundation, for sharing invaluable insights into the grant process—from understanding what funders are really looking for to avoiding common proposal mistakes and positioning ideas for success.

šŸ’” Here’s what attendees walked away with:
āœ”ļø A better understanding of the grant process from a funder’s perspective
āœ”ļø Practical strategies for writing stronger proposals
āœ”ļø Greater confidence to pursue funding opportunities
āœ”ļø Actionable tools to help turn great ideas into funded initiatives

We’re committed to equipping entrepreneurs with the knowledge, resources, and connections they need to thrive. Judging by the energy in the room, this workshop did exactly that!

Thank you to everyone who attended, asked thoughtful questions, and invested in growing their impact. We can’t wait to see what you accomplish next!

šŸ“ø Check out a few highlights from this amazing workshop, and stay tuned for upcoming Grind & Growth sessions designed to help you build, grow, and succeed.

Every successful business starts with more than an idea—it starts with solving a real problem.

During our CommerceUplift Cohort 3 session on Ideate: From Idea to Business Concept, our entrepreneurs challenged their assumptions, refined their solutions, and practiced communicating their business concepts with one another. Through peer feedback and meaningful discussion, they gained greater clarity on who they serve, the problems they’re solving, and what makes their businesses unique.

This is where strong businesses begin—not with perfect ideas, but with the willingness to listen, learn, and refine. šŸš€

šŸŽØāœØ Art, History, and Community came together in a powerful way during the Manhattan Kansas Juneteenth Celebration!

A special thank you to artist Daisha Maria-Breona for creating an interactive community art experience inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.ā€˜s visit to Yuma Street before what would be his final university speech at Kansas State University in January 1968. Community members added words describing Dr. King’s legacy and shared their own ā€œsuperpowersā€ on a second canvas featuring a raised fist symbolizing empowerment, resilience, and unity.

The completed artwork reminds us that Dr. King’s vision continues to inspire us and that each of us possesses unique gifts that strengthen our families, organizations, and communities.

We also extend our gratitude to legendary Coach Dave Baker, a former Douglass School student and the first Black head baseball coach at a predominantly white university in the United States, for leading the Historic Yuma District Tour and sharing stories that brought Yuma Street’s rich history to life.

Together, these experiences connected past and present—honoring those who paved the way while encouraging all of us to recognize the power we hold to shape the future.

Special thanks to the Kansas Department of Education and the Kansas Volunteer Commission for awarding the Manhattan Juneteenth a Juneteenth Day of Service Mini-Grant, helping make these educational and community engagement activities possible.

Happy Father’s Day from Black Entrepreneurs of the Flint Hills! šŸ–¤

Today, we celebrate the fathers, grandfathers, mentors, and father figures who lead with purpose, sacrifice with love, and build legacies that strengthen our families and communities.

At BEFH, we know that when fathers invest in their children, they help create futures filled with opportunity, confidence, and possibility.

As we honor fathers everywhere, we thank you for the lessons you teach, the examples you set, and the dreams you inspire.

Happy Father’s Day to all the dads who are building generational wealth, nurturing future leaders, and leaving a legacy that will last for generations to come.
