Today we received the most heartfelt thank-you from the family of a nurse we were honored to recognize. Our hearts are full!
Words like these remind us why the North Dakota Nurse Honor Guard exists: to honor nurses who gave their lives to care, and to offer comfort to the families who loved them.
To the family of Nurse DoLores, thank you for trusting us with such a sacred moment. We are deeply grateful for your kindness and your words of encouragement.
It is our privilege to honor nurses, like DoLores, one tribute at a time.

𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐤 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐟𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐮𝐫 “𝐁𝐞𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐜𝐫𝐮𝐛𝐬” 𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬.
We are so grateful to the nurses who opened their hearts and allowed us to share a glimpse of who they are, beyond the uniform, beyond the title, and truly behind the scrubs. Each story has reminded us that nursing is more than a profession. It is compassion, sacrifice, humor, resilience, friendship, and love carried through years of service.
We hope more members will choose to share their stories in the future. Until then, we will let this series rest with gratitude. 𝐁𝐞𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐜𝐫𝐮𝐛𝐬: 𝐌𝐞𝐞𝐭 𝐃𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐚, 𝐋𝐏𝐍
Today we are honored to introduce 𝐃𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐚, an LPN with an incredible 𝟒𝟓 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐧𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠.
Donna joined the North Dakota Nurse Honor Guard as a way to give back by paying tribute to her fellow nurses. After a lifetime spent caring for patients, supporting families, and building deep friendships with other nurses, honoring those who served in the same calling holds a special place in her heart.
For Donna, nursing means 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐛𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞. She loved her patients, their families, and the bonds formed with fellow nurses along the way.
One area of nursing that has stayed with Donna most deeply is 𝐞𝐧𝐝-𝐨𝐟-𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞. Being present with a patient and their family as that person passed into eternal life was always an honor to her. She recognizes that every person’s journey is unique, sacred, and deserving of dignity.
When asked what it means to honor another nurse, Donna shared that it is very emotional. It may mean saying goodbye to someone she never personally knew, but there is still an immediate connection because they both spent their lives doing work they loved.
Outside of nursing and the Honor Guard, Donna enjoys 𝐠𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐳𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐬, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐚𝐥𝐥, 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐲. Her favorite way to relax is simple and perfect: reading a good book. Her favorite color is any shade of green, and when it comes to food, she enjoys pizza and steak.
Thank you, Donna, for your 45 years of compassionate care and for continuing to honor nurses with such heart. Green suits her beautifully, doesn’t it? A color of life, growth, and the kind of steady care that keeps blooming long after the shift ends.

Today, we honor the birthday of 𝐅𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐍𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐥𝐞, the founder of modern nursing and the woman remembered as 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙇𝙖𝙙𝙮 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙇𝙖𝙢𝙥.
Her legacy continues to shine through every nurse who has walked into a room with compassion, courage, knowledge, and steady hands. She understood that nursing was more than a task. It was presence. It was advocacy. It was service. It was seeing the human being behind the illness.
For the 𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐡 𝐃𝐚𝐤𝐨𝐭𝐚 𝐍𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞 𝐇𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐫 𝐆𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐝, her lamp remains a powerful symbol of the light nurses carry throughout their careers and the light we honor when their service comes to an end. On this day, we remember Florence Nightingale and all nurses who have followed in her footsteps. May we continue to carry the lamp with dignity, compassion, and grace.
