Today we remember and celebrate Juneteenth, a day that commemorates freedom, resilience, and the dignity of every human person.

Catholic Social Teaching reminds us that every person is created in the image and likeness of God and possesses inherent dignity that can never be taken away. As members of a Benedictine community, we are called to encounter Christ in one another and to help build communities rooted in justice, peace, hospitality, and love of neighbor.

May we continue to listen, learn, pray, and work toward a world that more fully reflects the dignity and freedom God desires for all people.

Our fourth Benedictine Hallmark is Prayer.

Prayer is the invitation to stay in relationship with God, not only in formal moments, but throughout the rhythms of daily life.

For Benedictine monks, prayer shapes the entire day. They return to it again and again in community, allowing it to anchor their work, rest, and relationships.

For students, prayer can be simple. It can be quiet moments in the morning, a breath before class, or a pause at the end of the day.

Prayer is less about perfection and more about presence.

Our third Benedictine Hallmark is Community.

Community is the invitation to share life with others in a way that is rooted in care, commitment, and mutual support.

For Benedictine monks, community is lifelong. They live, pray, and work together each day, sharing both the ordinary and the sacred rhythms of life.

For students, community is formed in intentional friendships, in showing up for one another, and in choosing presence over isolation.

We are not meant to walk this journey alone.

On the feast of Corpus Christi, the Church celebrates the gift of the Eucharist and the real presence of Christ with us.

In the Eucharist, we encounter Jesus, who gives Himself completely and remains with us in a deeply personal and abiding way.

This feast reminds us that we are never alone. Christ is present in our lives, strengthening, sustaining, and drawing us into deeper communion with Him and with one another.

As we continue through this summer, may we find moments to pause, recognize His presence, and receive the gift of His love.

Our second Benedictine Hallmark is hospitality.

Hospitality is the practice of making space for others with openness and love, recognizing the presence of Christ in every person we encounter.

For Benedictine monks, hospitality is central to their way of life. Every guest is received as Christ and welcomed with care, prayer, and generosity.

For students, hospitality often takes shape in simple ways. It can look like including someone in conversation, being attentive in friendships, or choosing kindness in everyday interactions.

Small moments of welcome can shape a community in powerful ways.

Our first Benedictine Hallmark is stability.

In a world that constantly encourages busyness, distraction, and moving on to the next thing, Benedictine spirituality invites us to stay rooted.

For Benedictine monks, stability means a commitment to a community and a way of life. They live, pray, and grow in the same monastic community from the day they enter the monastery until the end of their lives.

For students, stability might look different, but the invitation is the same. It can look like creating rhythms that keep you grounded in prayer, relationships, and intentional living, even in seasons of change.

Sometimes, holiness is built less in big moments and more in small daily faithfulness.

This summer, we'll be exploring the Benedictine Hallmarks - values that shape not only monastic life, but also our life together as a Benedictine community.

Through this series, we'll reflect on what Benedictine spirituality can teach us about living with intention in everyday life, and how these values are lived out by monks, students, and our campus community.

We're excited to walk through this series together!

Today, the Church celebrates Pentecost, the coming of the Holy Spirit and the birthday of the Church.

Pentecost reminds us that we are never left to live the Christian life alone. The same Holy Spirit that strengthened the disciples continues to guide and renew the Church today.

As summer begins, may we remain open to the ways God is moving in our lives through prayer, community, friendship, silence, and ordinary moments of grace.

Come, Holy Spirit.
