The WMAA social media pages (Facebook and Instagram) are produced and maintained by the WMAA, an office dedicated to keeping medical alumni and medical students connected to the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health (UWSMPH) and each other. The purpose of these pages is to facilitate a positive community for MD alumni and MD students with topics relevant to the UWSMPH. While we welcome and encourage postings, the WMAA reserves the right to remove comments, links, photos or other content that it deems off-topic, obscene, a violation of intellectual property rights or privacy laws, commercial, or otherwise illegal or not germane to the purpose of these pages. Our status as a public institution also means that the university has to comply with certain legal requirements when responding to complaints about a post or requests for posts or comments to be removed. With limitations on what the university can remove, we focus on responding with additional information and resources for members to consider in the alternative. Big congrats to Aaron Struck, MD '09, who was named the inaugural endowed chair for epilepsy at WashU medicine in St. Louis! He joined WashU as associate professor of neurology and head of the adult epilepsy section, and also received tenure in the department of Neurology at WashU.

Dr. Struck's work focuses on surgical treatment of idiopathic generalized epilepsy, EEG, neuroimaging, molecular imaging, and data science. He previously served at UW as assistant professor of neurology, as well as medical director and section head of epilepsy and neurophysiology.

We will miss you both, Aaron Struck, MD '09 and Soma Struck, MD '08!

We think of Gloria Sarto, MD '58 and smile, and bow to all that she contributed.

All are invited to join the UW Dept of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Gloria Sarto Reproductive Health Equity Symposium on Oct. 22 from 7:20-10:15am in HSLC Room 1335. The event will feature research presentations and a keynote by Camille Clare, president of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, plus Brief and Brilliant presentations from across SMPH and a panel on family building and fertility care.

Congratulations to India Anderson-Carter, MD, ‘20, UW assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology, who was selected to receive the AAMC 2026 Herbert W. Nickens Faculty Fellowship Award!

The award recognizes an outstanding junior faculty member who demonstrates leadership potential in their efforts to promote equal opportunity in medical education and access to quality health care; demonstrates efforts in addressing educational, societal, and health care needs of underserved populations in the United States; and is committed to a career in academic medicine.

Why Wisconsin?

“The best thing about my Wisconsin medical education was that the whole state was our campus, leading to an amazing diversity of clinical experience.”

Julia Kyle, MD ’95 runs Confluence Healthcare, a solo med/peds practice in Eau Claire, one of the Wisconsin communities where she trained as a medical student. She’s pictured here competing in last year’s Birkebeiner in Hayward, another Wisconsin community where she completed a clinical rotation. And she loves seeing old friends at her WMAA class reunions!

At UW SMPH, the whole state is our classroom... and our incredible playground, too.

Never a dull moment for our TRIUMPH students!

The Leadership Course with M4s has been everywhere...Wellness hike along Lake Michigan at Seven Bridges Park; visit to a City Hall Committee meeting to learn about local government and public health; visit to the Hunger Task Force with Dr. Reno Wright as part of their TRIUMPH Leadership Course, then joined M3s at Neighborhood House of Milwaukee (shout out to Michelle Lin and Seamus McWilliams for organizing!).
Students learned more about the organization and snapped this great photo with Executive Director Jon Janowski on their roller-skating rink.

WMAA - via the WMA Fund - is proud to invest in student organizations and the many ways they support our students, fostering career exploration, service, leadership and a strong sense of community.

Recently, the PM&R Interest Group offered a subspecialty panel featuring three physiatrists who've taken very different paths in the field, from pain medicine to peds to administration - including our own Steve Wiesner, MD '85 and Melissa Villegas, MD '13.
