Like so many of you, I first met Marc while he was presenting about NASW-WI and the importance of social work students voting. During the lunchtime presentation, I remember being so surprised by his energy and passion. Also, his knowledge of the Wisconsin political system made me think he is such a nerd.
A year later, I would be interviewing for a job to work with this nerdy, passionate guy. From the moment I met Marc, he made me feel comfortable. As anyone who interviews with Marc will remember, he offered me coffee, tea, or water. His calm presence made me feel comfortable right away. As the interview went on, I realized how transparent Marc is.
What I thought would be a job became a mentorship. Marc has always maintained an open-door policy. In our many conversations, he not only provides thoughtful feedback but is also willing to hear out solutions and ideas. What many people saw as just fun banter between Marc and me was, in fact, a deep respect and admiration for each other.
Something underappreciated is Marc’s willingness to try new things and to hear different perspectives. He would often say, “Maybe you can convince me otherwise.” He often would listen to understand and think deeply about my perspective. He listens not only to me but also to Kristina, interns, and, most importantly, members.
Marc truly enjoyed helping members through difficult ethical situations and licensing questions. I am still convinced that the days when he couldn’t call people back or chat with them right away made him sad. In-person connections, such as conferences or regional events, would bring Marc to life.
After 33 and a half years of guiding and advocating for our profession, Marc is finally taking time to rest and enjoy his family. I am sure he will continue to advocate for our profession and our clients.
