The APIDA Student Center bids farewell and well wishes to Tev Lee and Daniel Sanji:

From the moment I accepted this position and stepped foot in the APIDA Student Center start-up space, I knew there was something special. Over the past 3 years I have seen how the APIDA campus community celebrate their unique identities and cultivate space for themselves – space that is often difficult to come by. The amount of resilience and tenacity from the APIDA community is unbound. I could not have been able to achieve and move the APIDA Student Center in ways unimaginable without the students, staff, faculty, alumni, and APIDA Student Orgs who all have had a hand in shaping the ways we have persevered and continue shaping history. Although it is bittersweet, I leave knowing there are many who will continue to be agents of change and cultivate what is needed for this community. Thank you for all the wonderful memories, experiences, and friendships. I am forever grateful and appreciative of all whom I have had the pleasure crossing paths with. In community,
- Tev Lee, APIDA Program Coordinator

Three years ago, Tev and I started our work together at the APIDA Student Center, and now we will both be moving on together. Tev’s transition will leave a void in the APIDA community because anyone who knows him knows how much he does for us. I am proud of our work. In the past three years, under our leadership, we have doubled the physical APIDA start-up space, saw the center through the pandemic and a rise in anti-Asian hate, led the first in-person APIDA Heritage Month in three years, and finally, advocated expanding the APIDA student staff to two interns. There is still so much work to be done, so much more to resist and demand from the institution, but I leave knowing that we have fostered community. I am sad to leave my APIDA family, but I fully trust the APIDA students who will remain a part of the APIDA Student Center!
– Daniel Sanji, APIDA Cultural Programming Intern (‘19-‘22) & Class of ‘22

APIDA Heritage Month could not be what it is today without the courage to take action and lean into our communities to amplify the unique cultures and voices that radiate from our students. Even though our campus-wide celebration comes to an end today, nationally, we encourage folx to continue celebrating Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month in May! For the APIDA community, may we continue to celebrate each and everyday.

Thank you to Daniel Sanji, Chair of the APIDA Heritage Month Planning Committee, and the amazing students of the Planning Committee who pour their heart and soul into a wonderful month of various ways we can celebrate our APIDA identities and communities. Thank you to all who participated and attended our programs and events within the month. A huge shout out and thank you to all our campus partners and collaborators who support the efforts of the APIDA Heritage Month Planning Committee. These initiatives are from students, for students; courageous actions that bring and center our communities.

Our voices are stronger together when we find Courage in Community!

Wishing you all a very happy and prosperous Vaisakhi!

Vaisakhi, also known as Baisakhi, is an ancient festival of Punjabis observed on April 13th (sometime the 14th), marking the Solar New Year and celebrating spring harvest. It is regionally known by many names but celebrated in broadly similar ways by South Asian communities, such as Hindus and Punjabis.

Happy Songkran & Sursedey Chnam Thmey!

Songkran is the traditional Thai New Year festival that is celebrated on the 13th of April and extends to the 15th. “Songkran", which comes from the Sanskrit word meaning transformation or change. It’s an old tradition passed down, which marked the rising of Aries on the astrological chart. It is a time of celebrating love, compassion, and thankfulness using water as the means of expression.

In Laos, the New Year is called “Pi Mai or Songkran” and is also observed from April 13th-15th, which takes place in the hottest time of the year in Laos, and also marked the start of the monsoon season.

In Cambodia, the New year is referred to as “Choul Chnam Thmey or Moha Sangkran” and is observed from April 14th-16th. It’s the traditional celebration of the solar new year in Cambodia which marked the end of the harvesting season.

Join the APIDA Student Center, the APIDA Heritage Month Planning Committee, and the Thai Student Association (TSA) in celebrating the Thai, Lao, and Cambodian New Years on Friday, April 15th! We will be in the MSC Lounge at 6pm!
