Madison Food Not Bombs is a grassroots peace collective. We salvage surplus/wasted vegetarian and vegan food, prepare it into delicious meals, and hold public food share demonstrations to serve it for free to everybody. We only serve surplus vegetarian and vegan food to demonstrate that we can feed people solely from careless waste, moreover, waste that is delicious, healthy, and animal friendly.
In addition we distribute other essential living items, and literature focused on peace, social justice, animal rights, environment, etc. Everybody is welcome on either side of the table--as our collective has no leaders and we operate on consensus. So bring your buddy to eat a free meal, share a meal, or just stop by and say hello. Exchange knowledge with your community. Food Not Bombs has served all over Madison. However, Library Mall is our main location (we'll always post the day, time, and location). In addition we aid and join with pro-peace, anti-war, social justice, or other demonstrations and protests that share our advocacy. Food Not Bombs is a grassroots global movement that was founded in 1980 by anti-nuclear activists in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It has spread throughout the world as independent collectives commonly by city, sharing free vegan and vegetarian meals to all. The nature of our services should not be mistaken as simple charity. One of FNB's founding inspirations came from a Women's International League for Peace and Freedom poster that reads, "it will be a great day when our schools get all the money they need and the air force has to hold a bake sale to buy a bomber"; www.foodnotbombs.net/bakesale_poster.html. At our core we are a peace group. One that is the manifestation of: protesting war, poverty, waste, and the destruction of our environment; advocating for social justice, and defending human and animal rights; raising awareness of food & hunger issues, poverty, homelessness, waste, over-consumption, and the unjustness of military & weapons spending; spreading peace; including everybody. Here in Madison we are our own independent collective of volunteers. Everything we distribute is always free and for anybody who wants it. In order to be most accessible and inclusive we only serve at outdoor public areas. Anybody can be a volunteer or patron as Food Not Bombs strives to include everybody and for all to be equals. Peace can only be achieved collectively. facebook.com/MadisonFoodNotBombs
