Last month, WJW Construction Organizer David traveled to Pittsburgh to present our “Protecting Immigrants at Work & in the Community” training to SMART union leaders from across the U.S. and Canada.

As the first time we've offered this training outside Wisconsin, it was an exciting opportunity to discuss with labor leaders how to protect immigrant workers' rights. We look forward to continuing to expand this important work.

Worker Justice Wisconsin is proud to support a new worker-led cleaning cooperative as they explore commercial cleaning services for warehouses, offices, churches, shared spaces, and more 🧽✨

The cooperative is currently gathering feedback from businesses and organizations to better understand local cleaning needs and help guide future fundraising for equipment and materials.

Come to our new office (1602 S Park St., #116) at 12pm. We will then ferry folks over to Library Mall and march together at 1pm. If you have a WJW t-shirt, be sure to wear it! If not, wear red!

El otoño pasado, José Ángel, Eliezer y Gerson hicieron el framing para Rojo Construction LLC, un subcontratista de segundo nivel en una obra en Waunakee. Al finalizar el trabajo, su empleador les debía casi $15,000 en salarios no pagados.

José Ángel, Eliezer y Gerson acudieron a Justicia Obrera Wisconsin, aprendieron sus derechos laborales y actuaron de manera colectiva. Poco después, el subcontratista de primer nivel —quien había contratado a su jefe— intervino para cubrir los sueldos, y ellos recuperaron todo lo que se les debía.

Workers recuperate $14,520 in wages from construction project in Waunakee, WI! ✊✊✊

Last fall, José Ángel, Eliezer, and Gerson did wood framing for Rojo Construction LLC, a second-tier subcontractor on a site in Waunakee. By the end, their employer owed them nearly $15,000 in unpaid wages.

José Ángel, Eliezer, and Gerson came to Worker Justice Wisconsin, learned their rights, and acted collectively. Shortly thereafter, the first-tier subcontractor who contracted their boss stepped in to cover the wages, and they recuperated all that was owed to them.

If you work in construction and are being mistreated, there is a growing movement of rank-and-file construction workers that wants to support you. [Español abajo] This past weekend, Worker Justice Wisconsin participated in a panel discussion on lessons learned from Minnesota. It was an honor and a privilege to think alongside our movement siblings from the Communication Workers of America, the International Association of Machinists, the St. Paul Federation of Teachers, and Voces de la Frontera. A key lesson that panelists discussed was leverage. Workers need to power map their workplaces and their communities to identify points of leverage, or structural sites where organized worker power can exert real influence on decision-makers. For example, Minnesota workers talked about how they pressured major corporations like Target to speak out against ICE's occupation of the Twin Cities. El pasado fin de semana, Justicia Obrera Wisconsin participó en una charla sobre las lecciones aprendidas en Minnesota. Fue un honor y un privilegio reflexionar junto a nuestros compañeros: los Communication Workers of America, la International Association of Machinists, la St. Paul Federation of Teachers y Voces de la Frontera. On February 19, we held our first anti-wage theft assembly of the year, an important step in strengthening our campaign for worker justice in Wisconsin.

Workers and community members came together to share experiences, learn how to identify pay irregularities, and build collective action. One worker shared that he receives his pay through an app he doesn't know how to use and has never received a pay stub. "I've noticed that sometimes I get paid less, and I don't know why."

Without pay transparency, workers cannot verify hours worked, deductions, or overtime pay. When workers understand their paychecks, fear turns into clarity. When they come together to organize, that clarity becomes collective power.

Our next assembly takes place May 21, 5:30-7:00 PM. All are welcome and no prior experience necessary. Just a commitment to learn and build solutions together.

El 19 de febrero, tuvimos nuestra primera asamblea del año contra el robo de salarios, un paso importante para fortalecer nuestra campaña por la justicia laboral en Wisconsin.

Trabajadores y miembros de la comunidad se reunieron para compartir experiencias, aprender a identificar irregularidades en el pago y construir una acción colectiva. Un trabajador compartió que recibe su pago a través de una aplicación que no sabe utilizar y que nunca ha recibido un talón de pago. "He notado que a veces me pagan menos, y no sé por qué".

Sin transparencia salarial, los trabajadores no pueden verificar las horas trabajadas, las deducciones ni el pago de horas extras. Cuando los trabajadores entienden sus cheques de pago, el miedo se transforma en claridad. Cuando se unen para organizarse, esa claridad se convierte en poder colectivo.

Nuestra próxima asamblea tendrá lugar el 21 de mayo, de 5:30 a 7:00 p. m. Todos son bienvenidos y no se requiere experiencia previa; solo el compromiso de aprender y construir soluciones juntos.

The members of the cleaning cooperative started off the year strong, learning from members of the community.

This winter, cooperative members dug into the foundations of cooperative finances through three powerful learning experiences. First, Lisette Chanta from UW Credit Union walked the group through personal finances, credit building, and how the structure and values of a financial institution shape the products and services it offers. The group left better equipped to build their credit and with a deeper understanding of how credit unions are grounded in the same principles as cooperatives.

Building on that, Esther West from Shared Capital Cooperative led a hands-on session on uses and sources of capital and a role-playing exercise where co-op members stepped into the role of a loan officer evaluating businesses for funding. A key takeaway: strong communication and systems of checks and balances make a cooperative a more attractive candidate for funders.
Finally, the cooperative sat in on a board meeting at Community Pharmacy Cooperative, where members got a firsthand look at how a cooperative runs, from cash flow to security to scheduling to social media. The group was also pleased to see how the emotional wellbeing of its members is valued as a metric of success in the business

Los miembros de la cooperativa de limpieza comenzaron el año con fuerza, aprendiendo de miembros de la comunidad.

Este invierno, los miembros de la cooperativa profundizaron en los fundamentos de las finanzas cooperativas a través de tres poderosas experiencias de aprendizaje. En primer lugar, Lisette Chanta, de la UW Credit Union, guió al grupo a través de temas como las finanzas personales, la construcción de historial crediticio y cómo los valores fundamentales de una institución financiera moldean sus productos y servicios. [Español abajo] This morning, students enrolled in the YWCA's computer skills course attended a workshop by Frida and Lola, our co-ops organizer and board member, to learn about basic worker rights and worker co-ops. The students shared their past work experiences, and learned about how to protect themselves and their coworkers from unscrupulous bosses. Come and visit us anytime!

Esta mañana, los estudiantes inscritos en el curso de informática de la YWCA asistieron a un taller dado por Frida y Lola —nuestra organizadora de cooperativas y nuestro miembro de la junta directiva— para aprender sobre los derechos laborales básicos y las cooperativas de trabajadores.
