[Español abajo] Last night, the City of Madison recognized Sept 15 - Oct 15 as Hispanic Heritage Month and awarded this resolution to Worker Justice Wisconsin in recognition of the worker center's support for Hispanic workers. Several of our members and organizers attended and spoke before the Common Council of the challenges Hispanic immigrants face in the workplace and the importance of organizing. [Español abajo] "Not even the animals work for free because at least they get fed.” That’s what José had to say about his experience of not being paid his wages. It has been over a year since the Department of Workforce Development determined that José, a former employee at Taco Madre, is owed more than $27,000 in unpaid wages. When the employer still refused to pay, the DWD referred the case to Dane County’s district attorney, but Wisconsin district attorneys choose not to prosecute this as a crime even though they have the statutory authority to do so. José asks the million dollar question: if Wisconsin's legal system won't intervene when employers refuse to pay their workers, should workers in our state be prepared to work for free? José is sharing his shocking story to encourage workers to organize and reform Chapter 109, Wisconsin's broken wage theft law. [Español abajo] In 2025, Gerardo, a restaurant worker, approached Worker Justice Wisconsin because his employer had not paid him several months' worth of wages. In 2024, Gerardo and Cecilia traveled across the country to Wisconsin with the promise of a good-paying job. What they got was $5,531.75 in unpaid wages (per the Dept of Workforce Development's investigation). Gerardo and Cecilia's story is, unfortunately, all-too-common in Wisconsin because our anti-wage theft law Chapter 109 is far weaker than other states’ like Minnesota and New York. Employers take advantage of this. But Gerardo and Cecilia decided to take action. In addition to filing a complaint (which Gerardo won), they joined Worker Justice Wisconsin and Representative Angelina Cruz to share their story and demand that Wisconsin do more to protect workers' wages. Gerardo is still waiting for his money.

[Español abajo] WJW has taken a decisive step toward eliminating wage theft in our state. Wage theft is our number one issue due to our state’s dysfunctional wage theft law: Chapter 109. On paper, 109 doesn’t look terrible. It codifies wage theft as a civil offense and establishes a clear process and penalties. In practice, 109 is broken. The state doesn't have enough investigators, and each investigator has 80-100 cases . On average, a worker has to wait over a year for the process to play out! What's worse, the state has no enforcement capacity, resulting in countless unenforced determinations. But on Aug 11, workers gathered to discuss what a reformed 109 might look like and generated a list of ideas. On Aug 20, WJW met with to share our ideas. Rep. Cruz pledged to help us improve WI’s legal protections for workers’ hard-earned money. Worker Justice Wisconsin’s annual joint membership-board assembly brought members and leaders together to reflect, make decisions, and plan for the year ahead. 🤝

During the meeting, members received updates on campaigns, finances, and upcoming priorities while helping shape the future of our organization.

Members also elected three new board members: Dawn Jones, Katherine Charek-Briggs, and Laura Dresser.

Together, we continue building power to combat wage theft, support worker-owned cooperatives, and improve workplace standards across Wisconsin through organizing.
