Every day, people in our community are fighting addiction — and every day, recovery is possible.

On International Overdose Awareness Day, Catholic Charities of Madison stands with the individuals and families across southern Wisconsin touched by addiction and overdose. Through 5 Door Recovery, we walk alongside people seeking a way forward — offering treatment, support, and a place where dignity comes first, no matter where someone is starting from.

Recovery isn't out of reach. If you or someone you love needs help, 5 Door Recovery is here.

This week at the Catholic Multicultural Center (CMC), we kicked off a new Food Service Job Training cohort. Dina, CMC’s trainer, is teaching participants how to chop, slice, sanitize, and work safely in a commercial kitchen, while our dedicated volunteer ESL teachers help them learn the vocabulary and phrases they’ll need on the job.

One trainee, Wencio, who is an electrical engineer originally from Cuba, heard about the program after joining CMC’s ESL classes a month ago. A lifelong learner, he’s eager to expand his skill set and says the training will let him take on more responsibilities at his current workplace.

Each person in the program has a unique story, but everyone shares the goal of gaining practical skills to support themselves and their families. After the course ends, CMC staff will help trainees prepare for the ServSafe exam and apply for employment using their new certification.

When fathers are supported and equipped, families are stronger for it. On August 25, from 2:00–3:00 PM, Walking with Moms (and Dads too!) is hosting a free online webinar exploring the role fathers play in their children's lives.

Our guest presenter, Johnny Alicea, leads the Fatherhood Program at Catholic Charities in Hartford, Connecticut — work focused on helping men grow as fathers, with real support along the way for things like employment, finances, and education.

If you volunteer with Walking with Moms, this webinar will help you talk about fatherhood with more confidence and care. And if you're just curious about the ministry, you're welcome too.

Dignora is a regular participant in our beginner ESL classes at the CMC. When we asked her why she is so driven to come to class, she let us know that she wants to learn English for a better quality of life in the US. She believes improving her English skills will make for better relationships, better communication at work, and a better experience at the hospital.

Dignora shared that the class, teachers, and students are beautiful. Practicing conversation and writing is helpful, and the teachers being able to interpret is supportive. Thank you for being a valuable part of our classes, Dignora!

ESL classes will be ending the summer session 8/20, and resuming the week of 9/14. For class times, please visit our website: cmcmadison.org

🌟 Staff Spotlight: Welcome to a new role, Lynn! 🌟

We’re thrilled to officially introduce Lynn as our new Food Programs Coordinator! Many of you already know her from our Culinary Creations program, and we are so lucky to have her stepping in to oversee our food pantry and free meal programs.

We also want to send a huge, heartfelt THANK YOU to Antonio, our recently retired manager, for his years of love and dedication. Lynn shares, "Antonio cared for each and every individual. I hope that someday I can be the person that people feel just as comfortable coming to for help."

Lynn took the reins on July 1st and immediately proved she works great under pressure—expertly juggling a bustling pantry and covering the meal program her very first week!

A few fun facts about Lynn's first month:

- She loves connecting: Though initially a bit intimidated by language barriers, she quickly found that connecting with our guests is the absolute best part of the job.

- She appreciates our helpers: She has been blown away by our volunteers, noting, "They are awesome, and we absolutely couldn’t do this without them!"

- She's staying busy: Coming from a solo role, she worried this position might be a little "too quiet." Spoiler alert: She is staying incredibly busy and loving every minute of it!

Lynn says this community already feels like family. 🍎 Next time you stop by the pantry or meal program, please give her a warm welcome! 💚

🌱 Did you know? During the growing season, the Catholic Multicultural Center (CMC) Food Pantry Garden provides all the fresh produce for both our food pantry and meal program!

The best part? This incredible garden is powered entirely by volunteers. 💚

Whether you have a green thumb or have never picked up a garden trowel, we'd love to have you join us. No gardening experience is necessary—just a willingness to lend a hand and help provide fresh, healthy food for our neighbors in need.

🌿 Come grow with us! For more information on volunteering in the garden, click the link below.

Bethy and her husband Carlos are dedicated students in the CMC's English classes. Bethy shared with us why it is important to her to improve her English;
"I use English all day. My listening skills are good, but I want to understand what people are saying better. I use English when traveling, going to the hospital, and most importantly with my family who lives in and is from Wisconsin. They all speak English fluently at home, and I want to be able to talk with them easily. I like the class because I learn many new words each day. The teachers are very patient, even though it can be difficult to teach so many people from different cultures."

We thank Bethy for being an active participant in our ESL classes, and invite others to join for the remainder of the summer session! More info can be found on our website at https://cmcmadison.org/esl-classes/
