We are excited to recognize Kirsten Houghton as a recipient of the 2026 Lead United Leading with Heart award!

For more than three decades, Kirsten Houghton has strengthened our community through her generosity, leadership and service. A United Way Loyal Contributor since 1990 and Leadership Giver since 2013, Kirsten has shared her time, talent and treasure in countless ways, from leading Women United and helping raise nearly $1.4 million to support Schools of Hope literacy tutoring to serving on the United Way Foundation Board and helping steward resources that will benefit our community for generations.

Last year, Kirsten established the Houghton Family Fund through the United Way Foundation in honor of her late husband, Larry. The fund reflects both Larry's unwavering support of the causes she cares about and Kirsten's own commitment to creating lasting change. Through her philanthropy, volunteer leadership and vision for the future, Kirsten continues to make a profound impact across Dane County.

We look forward to celebrating all of our Leading with Heart award recipients on Thursday, October 29 at Lead United: Small Plates, Big Impact; A Flannel & Fireside Soiree!

Partners in Giving is an annual, volunteer-driven workplace campaign through which State of Wisconsin, Universities of Wisconsin, and UW Health employees can conveniently give to many of their favorite charitable organizations.

Since 1973, employees have contributed more than $92 million to local, state, national and global charities through the Partners in Giving Campaign.

United Way of Dane County is proud to recognize Sheila and Kevin Conroy as the 2026 Tocqueville Society Honorees for their exceptional leadership, philanthropy and commitment to our community.

Since making Madison their home in 2006, Sheila and Kevin have made a lasting impact through their professional leadership, personal philanthropy and service to organizations across Dane County. Kevin, former CEO of Exact Sciences, has been a longtime champion of United Way, while Sheila has shared her expertise and leadership with numerous community organizations and foundations.

Together, they have supported education, healthcare and community well-being, including through their leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic and the establishment of a legacy fund to support United Way’s mission for generations to come.

We’re honored to celebrate Sheila and Kevin and their enduring commitment to building a stronger Dane County where all can thrive.

Too often in Dane County your ZIP code and income significantly affect your quality of life, life expectancy and health outcomes. United Way’s infant and maternal health partnerships work to change that by improving outcomes for parents, babies and families.

“Maria” came to United Way partner Access Community Health Centers early in her pregnancy facing housing instability, food insecurity, limited transportation and little social support, along with the added challenge of gestational diabetes. Through Access’s Maternal Child Health program, she received coordinated, team-based care addressing both medical and social needs. Her care team helped her access stable housing, nutrition assistance and reliable transportation.

With consistent prenatal care, education and mental health screening, Maria improved her health and prepared for her baby’s arrival. After delivery, she received postpartum care, lactation support and guidance on infant well-being, including early literacy practices that promote bonding and brain development.

United Way works closely with our community partners to help people overcome barriers to healthy living and ensure neighbors can live their healthiest lives. By partnering with organizations like Access Community Health to advance our Healthy Community strategies, we work to strengthen families and advance a healthier community for every neighbor.

Today, we pause to remember September 11, 2001 and the lives forever changed by that day.

We remember the people we lost, the first responders and the many people who stepped forward to help. We also remember the way communities came together in the days and weeks that followed, showing compassion, courage and care for one another.

Twenty-five years later, that spirit of coming together still matters. Today is a reminder of the strength we find in one another and the importance of looking out for our neighbors.

This Labor Day, we’re grateful for the generations of workers whose dedication has helped build stronger communities. We’re also proud of our longstanding partnership with the South Central Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO, and the many ways we work together to support our neighbors across Dane County.

United Way’s partnership with the labor movement dates back to the 1940s. Today, that commitment continues through the AFL-CIO and our local partnership with the South Central Federation of Labor, which helps ensure worker voices are represented in our work, connects dislocated workers with resources and supports efforts to strengthen financial stability.

We’re grateful for the labor leaders, unions and workers who continue to bring their time, talent and commitment to our community. Together, we’re building a Dane County where all can thrive.
