The darkness is creeping, the creatures are waking, and somewhere in the shadows, trouble is brewing…
Halloween night is almost upon us, and we are preparing to welcome you back for another Drive-Thru Trick-or-Treat filled with sweet treats, spooky sights, and a few surprises that might just make you scream! As you make your way through the darkness, keep your eyes open and your courage close. You never know what might be waiting around!

A Word to the Wise…
Not everyone enjoys a fright in the night, and that's perfectly alright!
For those who prefer their treats without the tricks, turn on your hazard lights as you enter and keep them on throughout the drive. Our creatures of the night will know to let you pass without a scare.
But if your lights aren't flashing, don't be surprised if something comes creeping!

Young or old, brave or shy, there's Halloween fun for everyone who stops by! And the best part? It’s FREE!
So gather your friends, round up the family, and spread the word far and wide…
The shadows are growing, the creatures are near,
And something is waiting as darkness draws near.
What lurks in the darkness? You'll have to come and see…
One thing's for certain, not everyone will leave without a scream!

Last Thursday night, members of Deep Branch Fire/Rescue continued their fire behavior training, advancing from Phase I to Phase II of the MAX Fire Box simulator.

Phase II takes fire behavior training and thermal imaging to the next level. The larger simulator allows firefighters to observe how fire, heat, and smoke travel between multiple rooms and floors of a structure. It also introduces multistory firefighting tactics, allowing firefighters to study how airflow, ventilation, and compartment isolation affect fire conditions throughout a building. This hands-on training builds on the knowledge gained during our first session, helping firefighters better understand fire behavior and how their actions can influence conditions during an actual structure fire.

Yesterday, our members had a great time visiting Deep Branch Elementary School, Riverwood Daycare, and Riverside Christian Academy as part of Fire Prevention Week!

We enjoyed having the opportunity to spend time with the students, share important fire safety lessons, and give them a closer look at what we do as firefighters. From talking about fire prevention and what to do in an emergency to showing them our trucks, gear, and equipment, each visit was a great opportunity to help them learn the importance of fire safety.
Fire prevention education is an important part of what we do. One of the highlights of our visits was having a few students ask for some of our firefighters' autographs! It's moments like those that remind us just how much of an impression we can make on the younger generation.

Thank you to the teachers and staff at each of these schools for welcoming us and allowing us to spend time with their students. We appreciate the opportunity to be a part of these visits and help encourage a safer community through education!

Today’s Fire Prevention Week tip focuses on lithium-ion batteries found in e-bikes, scooters, and power tools. These devices have become part of our everyday lives, but it's important to remember that the batteries powering them can pose a fire hazard if they're not used or charged properly.

When charging these devices, remember:
🔋 Charge them outside when possible, in a dry location suitable for charging.
🚪 Never charge them where they block an exit.
🔌 Always use the correct charger for the battery.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Durham Fire Department following a fire this morning that tragically claimed the life of one firefighter and left two others injured. We extend our deepest condolences to the fallen firefighter’s family, friends, and fellow firefighters. We also send our thoughts and prayers to the two injured firefighters, wishing them strength and a full recovery. During this difficult time, please keep the entire Durham Fire Department family in your thoughts and prayers. 🖤❤️🖤

As we continue through Fire Prevention Week, today’s safety tip is a simple reminder that can make a difference in preventing battery fires.

🔋FULLY CHARGED? TIME TO UNPLUG.
Once your device reaches a full charge, unplug it.
Leaving a device plugged in longer than recommended can place additional stress on the battery. Plug in. Charge up. Unplug when full.

It’s that time of year again, and we hope you’re ready!

Our Drive-Thru Trick-or-Treat event is back, bringing another night of Halloween fun, candy, and the scares that have made this event one to remember year after year. Now, if you’ve been through our Drive-Thru Trick-or-Treat before, then you know it’s worth the hype. But if this is your first time joining us, then you’re in store for a few tricks along with the treats.

⚠️ NOT A FAN OF SCARES?
Don’t worry! If you have little ones who aren’t fans of scares, turn on your hazard lights when you enter and leave them on throughout the drive. That lets our ghosts, goblins, and other things that go bump in the night know to give your vehicle a scare-free trip through.
But if those hazards are OFF…
You’re fair game.

So grab the kids, bring your friends, spread the word and come see what’s waiting in the darkness.
The candy will be waiting, the scares are being prepared, and the rest…
you’ll just have to experience for yourself.

As we continue sharing tips for Fire Prevention Week, today’s reminder is about knowing the warning signs that something may be wrong with a lithium-ion battery.
FEELS HOT? STOP USING IT.
Your battery may warn you when something isn't right.

Stop using a device or battery if you notice:
🔥 Excessive heat
🔋 Swelling or a change in shape
👃 A strange odor
💧 Leaking
💨 Smoke
👂 Popping or hissing sounds

These can be warning signs of a damaged or failing lithium-ion battery. A damaged battery can overheat and start a fire.

Charging your phone on the bed or couch might be convenient, but it isn’t the safest choice. Devices and chargers create heat while charging. Beds, pillows, couches, and other soft surfaces can trap that heat and block airflow, increasing the chance of the battery overheating. Always charge devices on a hard, flat surface such as a table, desk, or bare floor.
