Robeson House is 50 years old! Wow! This is a remarkable time in our history as an agency and as a community.
Robeson House was born as a result of an inherent need amongst the most vulnerable in our community: our youth, our children. The State of North Carolina, at the time, was going through a transition period, reflecting on how collectively the state will meet the needs of vulnerable, at risk youth. The injustice of it all was that there wasn’t an effective policy that addressed mental health, substance abuse and/or abuse in its many forms, truancy, children living in poverty and housing needs. The bar of expectation had not been met and yet exceeded in equal measure. The State had to act in order to address the concerns.
This led to the North Carolina General Assembly issuing a mandate that any child who is truant, indigent, unaccompanied, addicted and suffering any form of abuse will no longer be housed by their eras version of “training camps” and penitentiaries. Instead, they would be moved to group homes and services that could begin truly addressing societal failures.
This gave birth to Robeson House as a result. Robeson House became THE FIRST Temporary Emergency housing option in the State and remains the only option in the county! Right here in little ol Robeson County. We owe every thanks for this to the dedicated men and women who came together in the name of compassion, progress, fellowship and unadulterated love for their community and for our youth.
50 years later, surviving different administrations at the local, state and federal levels. After war and recessions. Being steady during natural disasters. Finally, riding the waves of change through policy and funding concerns. Robeson House remains.
Through it all, we have quietly yet firmly continued to serve. We show up. We give. We care.
We invited you on Saturday October 17th, 2026 from 1:30pm to 4:30pm, Robeson House will host an Open House.
Come out and see! Reflect along with us and let us give thanks that none of this would be possible if not for YOU.
Our community.
Robeson County Strong!
