San Joaquin County officials indicate they are taking a harder line in dealing with unhoused people who refuse to accept help — and they believe the efforts are paying off.

A forum held this week by the county Board of Supervisors brought together local officials at all levels as well as nonprofits and other agencies working to tackle the longstanding homelessness problem in the area. They gathered to share strategies and see how they can coordinate in dealing with one of the county’s most vexing problems.

The event was upbeat and offered encouragement in finding solutions even as it took a tough-love tone. Officials expressed hope that their efforts are paying off as homeless counts show big drops in the number of unhoused people in the county.

We set aside $200,000 for local grants. Then our community showed us just how much more opportunity is out there.

This year, 61 local organizations submitted requests totaling more than $2 million to the Lodi Legacy Fund, representing an incredible range of ideas and needs across the Greater Lodi area.

After a highly competitive review process, 11 organizations were invited to move forward as grant finalists, with projects ranging from youth programs and mental health services to housing, legal assistance and other community needs.

Together, the finalists are requesting up to $445,000, while the Lodi Legacy Fund currently has $200,000 available for grants this year.

The opportunity is clear. So is the gap.

Through Grant Boosters, community members can help us increase the funding available and say yes to more of these projects.

For Lodi, CA residents experiencing homelessness, Lodi Access Center offers shelter, meals, case management, job support, and other essential services.

If you or your family qualify for nutritional assistance, the San Joaquin County Human Services Agency Food For You Program will hold food distributions on October 1, 7, 15, 16, 20, 21, and 28, 2026.

Items may include canned vegetables, fruit, meat, and dry foods such as rice or pasta.
