We will continue to make people uncomfortable by speaking about su***de until we reach everyone one by one and reduce the stigma. We cannot heal as a community until we accept our veterans as a whole: the good, the bad and the ugly!
Su***de.
It's a word that makes many people uncomfortable. For Green Star Families, it's also the reality that brought our families here.
We're not going to avoid the conversation.
We're not going to replace the word with something easier to hear.
And we're not going to pretend Veteran su***de doesn't exist because it makes others uncomfortable.
We're going to talk about it.
We'll talk about the Veterans we love.
We'll talk about the families they left behind.
We'll talk about grief, healing, remembrance, and recognition.
Not because we want to define our Veterans by the way they died. Because we refuse to let their lives, or their families be forgotten.
If talking openly about Veteran su***de helps even one family feel seen, one person better understand, or one Veteran's legacy be remembered with dignity... Then it's a conversation worth having.
No family should feel invisible.
