Most people know the Whitewater Center for whitewater. But there’s a whole lot happening beyond the rapids. 🚲🥾🏃

The trail system has become a core part of the Whitewater Center’s mission to make the active, outdoor lifestyle easier to access. Guests can hike, run or bike the trails at no cost, and those same trails serve as the home base for more than 56 trail running and mountain biking races each year through the Whitewater Race Series.

As outdoor recreation continues to grow across the Charlotte region and North Carolina, we asked the Whitewater Center what other trail systems could learn from their experience.

Their answer was pretty simple: “You can never have too many trails.”

Trails are worth investing in, expanding and making easier for people to access. Because sometimes, all it takes is one trail to get someone outside and keep them coming back. 🌲

From mountain peaks to coastal waterways, North Carolina’s public lands give us a lot of room to explore. 🌲🥾🚲🛶🐎

Across our National Forests, National Park Service lands and North Carolina State Parks, trails connect us to some of the landscapes that make our state so special. This Saturday on National Public Lands Day, we’re celebrating the places that belong to all of us—and the land managers, trail crews, volunteers, organizations and communities who help care for them.

The best way to celebrate? Get out there and enjoy them! 💚

At Warren Wilson, there are plenty of ways to get outside without going far from campus. The River Trail is a 5-mile out-and-back through meadows and farmland along the river, while the Jones Mountain Trails offer a network of interconnected trails to wander and explore.

For a shorter outing, the Dam Pasture Trail connects the River Trail with loops farther along, and the nearby Big Berea and Bull Creek Trails make for an easy 2.8-mile walk through open fields, along Bull Creek, and past a few small waterfalls and swimming spots.

Not a bad backyard to have while you’re in college. 🌿

Hunting season is here in North Carolina, and if you’re heading out on the trails this fall, a little extra awareness can help everyone safely share the outdoors. 🍂🥾🚲

Deer archery season begins September 12, with blackpowder and gun seasons following at different times depending on where you are in the state. Other hunting seasons also overlap with fall and winter recreation.

Many places we know and love for hiking, biking, running and other outdoor recreation are also used for hunting. That includes public lands across the state, from the Pisgah and Nantahala National Forests in the mountains to Uwharrie National Forest, Sandhills Game Land and Croatan National Forest farther east.

If you’re hitting the trail this season:

🍊 Wear bright, highly visible clothing.
🐕 Keep pets close and consider something bright for them, too.
🥾 Stay on designated trails and pay attention to posted signs.
📍 Know whether hunting is permitted where you’re recreating.
📅 Check current hunting seasons for the specific area before you go.
🤝 Be courteous and give hunters and other trail users plenty of space.

Hunting dates vary by location, species and hunting method, so don't assume the season is the same everywhere in North Carolina.

Our public lands are shared spaces. A little preparation, visibility and respect can help everyone enjoy them safely this fall.

Know before you go, be seen, and share the outdoors! 🍂

The trails we enjoy don’t just appear. 🥾🚲🛶 Behind them are trail builders, maintenance crews, volunteers, planners, land managers, nonprofit organizations, local governments, advocates and countless community partners putting in the work.

As we head into Labor Day, we’re celebrating the many hands (and many hours of work) that help make North Carolina the Great Trails State.

To everyone who has helped build, maintain, restore, protect or advocate for a trail: thank you! 💚

Labor Day weekend is a great excuse to get outside, and there’s plenty happening across the Great Trails State! ☀️🥾🚲

Here are a few ways to spend the long weekend:

🏃 U.S. National Whitewater Center | Charlotte
Hit the trails for a 5K or 15K trail race, enjoy pass activities, and catch live music throughout the weekend.

🚲 End of Summer Jam | Ride Kanuga
Celebrate the end of summer with an Adaptive Mountain Bike Race, E-Bike Challenge, GoPro contest, and plenty more on two wheels.

🍎 NC Apple Festival | Hendersonville
Bike or walk your way downtown via the Ecusta Trail! Bike Walk Hendersonville will also offer bike parking at the start of the trail on Friday and Saturday.

🎆 Fireworks by the Sea & Boardwalk Blast | Carolina Beach
Kick off the long weekend on the coast with Carolina Beach’s final (and biggest) fireworks display of the summer.

🌲 TimberFest | Cradle of Forestry
Celebrate our forests with live wood artisans, timber sports demonstrations, local crafters, living history, family-friendly games, and hands-on activities in Pisgah National Forest.

However you spend the weekend, there are plenty of ways to get outside, explore somewhere new, and experience the Great Trails State.
