This week's featured adoptable horse is Stella, a 21-year-old Kentucky Mountain Saddle Horse mare currently available for adoption from the Kentucky Humane Society.

Stella's story is one of quiet resilience and second chances. She was captured as a starving stray in Eastern Kentucky, unsure of people and in desperate need of care. Over the past few months, Stella has made wonderful progress in training and rehabilitation. She can now be caught in the pasture, haltered, and led with ease. She stands politely for both the veterinarian and farrier and continues to gain confidence every day. Stella is looking for a loving home as a companion mare, and she would thrive with someone who appreciates the quiet bond that comes from earning a horse's trust.

🚨𝐀𝐋𝐄𝐑𝐓: 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐒𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐰𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐦-𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐑𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐊𝐘 𝐎𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐕𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧 🚨

Effective immediately and through Aug. 01, 2026:

✅ Any animal demonstrating clinical signs of NWS infestation are prohibited from entry into Kentucky
✅ Movement requirements for large animals originating from infested states are required to have:
✔️ Kentucky permit number obtained from the Kentucky Office of State Veterinarian (OSV)
✔️️ CVI Issued within 72 hours prior to entry into Kentucky
✔️ Signed statement from an Accredited Veterinarian (AV) attesting: “I have inspected the animals included in this shipment and have found them free of clinical signs of NWS myasis” or state of origin or Kentucky pre-movement inspection forms filled and signed if available. (must accompany movement)
✔️ Notation of any treatments given to the animals on this shipment for NWS
✔️ Signed Statement/Form obtained within 24 hours after entry into Kentucky attesting that the animals were inspected by (in order of preference): a private Kentucky AV or their authorized designee; a Kentucky OSV personnel (subject to availability); or a Kentucky USDA VS Personnel (subject to availability) AND that the animal is free of NWS.
⚠️ Equine movements must be accompanied by valid EIA result forms for each equine.
⚠️ ALL animal movements from the Counties containing Control Zones and Counties adjacent to counties containing Control Zones must also meet any Federal or State requirements for movement out of those Control Areas prior to entry into Kentucky.

🌡️🔥 Hot weather can increase the risk of heat stress in horses. Knowing what's normal for your horse — like their typical temperature, heart rate, and behavior — can help you spot early warning signs and take action before things get serious.

Help your horse beat the heat by:
💧 Providing free access to fresh, cool (45 to 65 degrees F) water.
🌳 Making sure horses have access to shade throughout the day.
🧂 Providing free access to salt to promote drinking.
💦 Rapidly cooling hot horses by applying continuous cool water over them.
❌ Limiting trailering or exercising horses if possible.

❗️ Screwworm update from the American Horse Council

‼️SCREWWORM UPDATE 06/08/2026 ‼️

As of June 8, 2026, there have now been multiple New World Screwworm detections in Texas, with one being in a county bordering New Mexico. Livestock movement restrictions are in place in Texas and information can be found here: https://www.tahc.texas.gov/



Currently, the US-Mexico border is closed to all livestock exports from the US to Mexico for any reason. This includes all horses. All livestock imports from Mexico to the US are still closed as well. Further, Canada is now restricting all imports of any livestock, including horses, from Texas, and prevents any livestock from entering Canda that have resided in or transited Texas in the previous 21 days prior to importation to Canada.
