FYI: Our TEP environment office will be accompanying the US EPA today (and the rest of this week) at the former junkyard site across the road from the Picnic Grove on Walmore Rd. Be aware that staff and contractors will be in that area (including the picnic grove parking area) and for everyone to drive carefully.

We are working on an assessment of the site which includes soil borings and installing monitoring wells to better understand everything so we know how to develop a cleanup plan.

Gov. Hochul calls herself New York’s first mom governor. Rene Rickard-Printup is also a mother and a delegate to the Haudenosaunee Environmental Task Force who has lived her whole life on the homelands of the Tuscarora Nation.

In a powerful new op-ed, she reminds the governor that Mother Earth is the first mother. She writes about aging nuclear facilities that were built without Haudenosaunee consent and run well past their intended lifespan, and about contaminated sites like West Valley that already poison Seneca waters today. As she puts it, these are not risks. They are lived realities.

She also offers a piece of history worth remembering. The suffragists at Seneca Falls in 1848 saw what equality could look like because Haudenosaunee women were already living it. Hochul stands where she stands, in part, because of that example. The least she can do is consult the people whose homelands are at stake and listen to their warnings about nuclear.

Her message to New Yorkers is: No new nuclear in New York. Not on Haudenosaunee homelands. Not on anyone’s.

April 22, 2026 – Earth Day! Let’s step back and remember, every day is earth day for the Haudenosaunee minded people! It is great to see society acknowledging the earth on April 22, but please remember humans take from the earth every single day of the year. We encourage you to be stewards of the land, give back to the earth just as much as you take all year round. Pick up your trash and litter every day, be good neighbors to all the living creatures by protecting their habitat. Last, only take what you need. Today, we encourage you to think broader instead of singular on this earth day. Let’s make Earth Day every day!
