U.S. military veteran Carol Whitmore stepped into the role of National Commander-in-Chief of the Veterans of Foreign Wars after years of working through spaces where women were often in the minority and had to prove their place in steady and visible ways. Millions of veterans depend on VA benefits, and decisions made at the national level directly shape access to care and support. She has spoken openly about her identity in service, saying, "I am a veteran who happens to be a female." She also said, "I told everybody I'm a veteran first. I just happened to be female." Her election reflects years of service inside the organization from local posts to national leadership.

The VFW, under her leadership, advocated ongoing policy fights that affect veterans across the country, including disability rating rules and legislative priorities. The organization pushed back against a VA interim final rule that considered medication impact in disability ratings, leading to its rescission on February 27, 2026. The VFW also continues support for the Major Richard Star Act, aimed at restoring full benefits for combat-injured veterans. Whitmore has emphasized steady service and continuity, while the organization continues its mission of advocacy and support for veterans and their families nationwide. Her leadership stands as a milestone in the VFW’s long history.
