WHEN EVERYONE'S THROWING MUD, BRING A ROPE
Jeremiah 38:7–13; 39:15–18
I don't know about you, but lately it seems impossible to escape the negativity. Political commercials, finger-pointing, accusations, and arguments everywhere we turn.
And if I'm not careful, I let all that noise steal a beautiful day God has given me.
There's a little-known man in the Bible named Ebed-melech who teaches us something powerful.
While Jerusalem was falling apart, the prophet Jeremiah had been thrown into a muddy pit and left to die.
Ebed-melech didn't join the arguments or look the other way. He spoke up, gathered some men, and brought ropes to rescue Jeremiah.
But he also brought old rags to protect Jeremiah from being hurt by the ropes.
He didn't just want to help somebody. He wanted to help him with kindness.
We may not individually be able to fix our country, change our leaders, or solve every problem around us. But we can make a difference in somebody's life today.
We can stand firm in our convictions without becoming hateful. We can speak the truth without being cruel.
TODAY'S CHALLENGE:
Before sharing another angry post, ask yourself:
Am I helping somebody out of the mud, or am I just throwing more mud into the hole?
Call someone. Encourage someone. Pray for someone you disagree with.
Remember, God sees the small acts of faithfulness that nobody else notices.
You don't have to agree with everybody to love somebody. When the world is throwing mud, be the one who brings a rope.
