For over 25 years, Rotary clubs in Sweden and Nairobi have partnered with local communities in Kenya to improve access to clean water and sanitation, building 235 water tanks and 250 latrines in communities and at schools.

The project provided clean water, improved sanitation, and health training to over 50,000 people, allowing families to have improved health, more time for school, work, and everyday life.

The project also invests in local skills. 64 artisans have been trained to build water tanks and are already being hired by neighboring communities. Women’s groups received skill-building training in leadership, bookkeeping, and reporting, and have taken the work even further, independently replicating at least 77 additional tanks using income from their own projects. The expertise stays because it’s built locally.

Meet Arlo, Rotary's Student of the Month! Growing up on his family's farm in Leavenworth, Arlo knew about responsibility from a young age. The 17 year-old Cascade High School senior has great memories of constantly being outside, trying new activities and getting involved in many projects.

As Associated Student Body president, Arlo appreciates the diversity of opinions from his classmates, listening to concerns and taking issues to the next level. He thinks the "no cell phone at school" policy has some real benefits. "It's helped me be more successful in classes and stay on task," said Arlo. Selected for the character trait of Interdependence, Arlo is also photo editor and on the publications team for the yearbook and school paper, a Knowledgebowl team member, and avid soccer player. For the last seven years he's played for Wenatchee FC. At CHS he has been a four-year varsity player, and team captain for the last two seasons.

Looking ahead, Arlo plans on attending a university with a Mechanical Engineering program where he can utilize his talents of creativity and design.

Congratulations, Arlo, for earning this recognition as an outstanding student, athlete and leader.

Leavenworth Rotary is proud to recognize Cascade High School sophomore Asa Duffield as student of the month. Asa appreciates learning new information and having a multitude of adventures. Whether it's playing trumpet in the school band, working toward his Eagle Scout designation or hiking in the mountains, the 16-year old savors the moments. "It was fun to build the picnic table up at Rosy Boa on Ski Hill," said Asa. "I biked there a lot and thought it would be a great place for people to have a table." Selected for the character trait of Punctuality, Asa also enjoys reading, fishing and Geology where he and his class uncover metamorphic rocks and learn about other natural resources.
