Our Story

Community Harvest is a program of Upper Valley Mend. We envision a healthy, self-reliant community with access to fresh, locally grown foods for every community member. Community Harvest works to strengthen the local food system by helping farmers manage excess or un-marketable products and making this food accessible to the communities of Chelan & Douglas counties through the region’s existing emergency food providers. This is accomplished by mobilizing volunteers to glean at local farms, orchards, and backyard gardens, and then donating the food to local food banks.

Community Harvest addresses local hunger in a unique way by providing access to fresh, local produce, something often missing in the local emergency food pantries due to limited cold storage, tight budgets, and logistically-challenging schedules. By establishing a wide network of donor farms and volunteers, as well as partnering with the local food distribution system, Community Harvest brings harvested produce to the region’s centrally located distribution warehouse, where it is then stored until it can be incorporated into the normal delivery schedule as soon as possible.
