On June 12th, we commemorate Women Veterans Day, marking the 1948 signing of the Women's Armed Services Integration Act. This occasion honors the dedicated service, sacrifices, and distinctive history of women in the U.S. Military. The GFWC Lilburn Woman's Club proudly recognizes our two esteemed members who have served in the military. Kathy Hartman, a veteran of the Air Force, was stationed in Anchorage, Alaska, and had the distinction of serving on Jimmy Carter's security detail during his salmon fishing trip. Christine Peredney, a 2nd Lieutenant in the Navy, served in Illinois as an assistant Top Secret Officer for the executive office. A local Athens newspaper featured her enlistment, highlighting the rarity of female enlistment at the time. The GFWC Lilburn Woman's Club is deeply proud of our two veteran members and has registered them with the Military Women's Memorial, which endeavors to document the histories of women serving in the military. We encourage anyone aware of a woman who has served our country to contact this registry to provide her service information.
