The Gwinnett Historical Society is super excited about America’s upcoming 250th birthday! Even more exciting is the fact that our GHS President (Jason West/Button Gwinnett) was a recent guest on the Gwinnett Chamber’s Voice of Business Podcast with Executive Director Nick Masino! You can find the podcast on Spotify, Apple Podcasts or at this link: https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MwSP4Hv4rWY__;!!BFH4GnwD9A!NLbeJLdXFQf6zVavKtlCYsL0H8kEOUb5ApEg7ACxag1wC3BDyxGUqKPIpI2M8toTq4IvhuRoArgRp6cwTV9bONkLNFtyo9du$

Today we celebrate South Carolina’s admission into the Union on May 23, 1788, as the eighth state to ratify the United States Constitution. From the earliest settlers who crossed into northeast Georgia in search of new opportunity to the many families who continue to make Gwinnett County their home today, the influence of the Palmetto State is woven into Gwinnett’s story.

During the early 1800s, many residents of South Carolina migrated into Gwinnett County following the opening of new lands after the county’s creation in 1818. They brought with them traditions, skills, and family connections that helped shape the communities that would grow across Gwinnett.

Today, we recognize and celebrate all those with South Carolina roots — past and present — who have contributed to the history, culture, and growth of Gwinnett County. Happy South Carolina Day to all who proudly call both the Palmetto State and Gwinnett home!

History on the Move!

The Gwinnett Historical Society is excited to loan Gwinnett Community Services a medical bag used by Dr. Fayette Sims, Jr., along with one of his anatomy books, for a special temporary exhibit at Bogan Park this summer highlighting medical care in early and mid 20th Century Gwinnett County.

We love when historic objects leave the archives and help tell Gwinnett’s story in new ways for the community to experience and enjoy.

Did you know Dr. Sims? If so, we would love to hear your memories and stories in the comments below!

Today marks 249 years since the death of Button Gwinnett — a man whose name is forever tied to the founding of our nation, yet whose story remains one of the most fascinating and least known of the American Revolution.

Merchant. Legislator. Revolutionary. Signer of the Declaration of Independence. His life was marked by ambition, controversy, failure, and political rivalry.

Gwinnett’s time on the national stage was brief, but his legacy endures nearly two and a half centuries later — not only in history books, but in the community that proudly bears his name.

As we remember the 249th anniversary of his death today, we invite you to watch this special video reflecting on the life, legacy, and lasting impact of Button Gwinnett.

We had a great GHS meeting this evening. Amelia Porter Lewis presented on her recent book and shared stories from the Island Ford Baptist Church community and its historic cemetery. Amelia spent more than two years researching and gathering information for the book. Her work on this project is a great example of why the preservation of local history is so important. Great job Amelia! Join us at our next meeting in July! GwinnettHS.org

We had a great Gwinnett Historical Society awards presentation this evening on what turned out to be a very special day. Today is the 207th birthday of Gwinnett County. On December 15, 1818, the Georgia Legislature established the greatest county in the history of the universe. Our Society members got into the celebration by singing a special birthday greeting to all Gwinnettians! We will post award photos later but for now, enjoy the singing and merriment! It’s fun to be a GHS member! Join us at GwinnettHS.org!
