While the house itself is looking great, thanks to the generous grant from Canal Society of NJ, the grounds around the Port Mercer Canal House could use a bit of TLC. To the end, the Society is hosting a Fall cleaning this Saturday, November 7th, from 10-12.

Representatives of the Delaware & Raritan Canal State Park and Canal Society of NJ visited Port Mercer today to inspect the ongoing repairs to the bridge tender's house. CSNJ is fully funding repairs, which are expected to cost upwards of $35,000. The second stage of repair work -- to the front porch and roof -- should begin early next month.

Many, many thanks to CSNJ for their generous support!

The Joseph Pierson house is a well-preserved home sited on Cold Soil Road. It consists of four sections, with the earliest dating from 1720 and containing 30-inch-thick walls. The primary portion was built in 1780, with the two additional sections built around 1860. It remained in the Pierson family until the 1940s.

Legend has it that a Hessian soldier was shot and killed when Colonists discovered him in one of the home’s closets. It is also rumored to have been a station along the Underground Railroad.
