LEADERS ARE NEEDED FOR "Honoring our Heroes, One Tombstone at a Time" Leaders are needed to organize work parties at cemeteries in each of these Lapeer County Townships: Burlington, Burnside, Deerfield, Dryden and Rich.

Will your group participate in the "Honoring our Heroes, One Tombstone at a Time" project? Small or large, if your organization, club or social group is looking for a meaningful project to celebrate America’s 250th please register now. This is a project of the Lapeer County Genealogical Society (LCGS) with a goal to clean 250 veteran tombstones in Lapeer County in 2026.

The Genealogical Society will supply organizing materials for your group, we’ll provide training on how to properly clean tombstones and we’ll supply safe and effective cleaning compounds at your group’s work session. Your group picks the day and time (3-4 hours) for your work session and provides a Team Leader. Your Team Leader will collaborate with a LCGS representative to create a meaningful event that will have a lasting effect on our community.

Specifically we are seeking help at these cemeteries: West Burnside Cemetery, North Branch Burlington Township Cemetery, South Burnside Cemetery, West Deerfield Cemetery, Dryden Center Cemetery, and Rich Cemetery.

This week Team Leaders for "Honoring Our Heroes, One Tombstone At A Time" learned more about the project and how to properly clean tombstones. And they cleaned nine stones while they were at it!

Registration is now open for individuals or groups to participate in "Honoring our Heroes, One Tombstone at a Time". Because many veteran's graves in Lapeer County have been neglected over the years, the project’s goal is to clean 250 veteran tombstones in 2026.

Community organizations in Lapeer Country are being recruited to assist in this effort. Small or large, if your organization, club or social group is looking for a meaningful project to celebrate America’s 250th please request more information from the Lapeer County Genealogical Society at [email protected]. We will send you a registration form. The date and time that you perform the service is up to you.

Volunteers in North Branch have already cleaned 28 veterans' tombstones at their local Greenwood Cemetery and have plans to clean more. They joined the “Honoring Our Heroes, One Tombstone At A Time” because they felt that some of the veterans' stones in that cemetery had been untended.

The Genealogical Society has a long tradition of cleaning and repairing tombstones and will help other organizations with training and supplies to clean veterans' tombstones in their local cemeteries. Individuals or family groups may also participate.

Did you miss us in Lapeer at the America 250 Celebration? Registration for “Honoring Our Heroes, One Tombstone At A Time” has begun! To register your organization, club or social group please email [email protected]. The Lapeer County Genealogical Society is waiting to hear from you!

On Saturday June 20th at Lapeer’s American 250 Celebration representatives from the project were in town answering questions and registering individuals and groups as volunteers for the project. Also, information was available that day at the Lapeer Veteran Services table.

Don’t worry, registration will continue throughout the summer but it is preferred to register as soon as possible. This is a local project led by the Lapeer County Genealogical Society. The Society has a long tradition of cleaning and repairing headstones and will help other organizations with training and supplies to clean veterans' headstones in their local cemeteries. At Saturday's America 250th Celebration at the Lapeer Courthouse, former Representative Howell mentioned the critical contribution our veterans have made against various threats to our nation over the years. It caused some of us to reflect on the fact that here in Lapeer Country there are many veteran graves which have been neglected over the years because their descendants live far away or are no longer able to keep their graves maintained. It is for this reason that the “Honoring Our Heroes, One Tombstone At A Time’” Project was launched. The Project's goal is to clean 250 gravestones of veterans this year in this county.

The Lapeer Country Genealogical Society is recruiting community organizations to assist in the effort.
