"Michigan voters overwhelmingly approved a constitutional amendment in 2018 requiring MDOS to automatically register eligible people to vote when they apply for or renew their driver’s license or state ID.

MDOS implemented the automatic voter registration (AVR) process in 2019.

Eligible residents between the age of 16 and 17.5 are automatically preregistered to vote.

Only U.S. citizens are eligible for AVR or preregistration.

In 2023, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed Public Acts 260, 261, 262 and 268, establishing the new process for Michiganders to opt out of AVR or preregistration by mail."

"History’s first U.S.-born pope, whose family history includes both enslaved people and slave owners, delivered the apology in his first encyclical, “Magnifica Humanitas,” (Magnificent Humanity), which was released Monday.

The sweeping manifesto is about safeguarding humanity in an era of increasing reliance on artificial intelligence. Leo raised the trans-Atlantic slave trade in relation to what he called the new forms of slavery and colonialism that the digital revolution is fueling, such as the unregulated labor required to procure rare minerals needed for AI chips."

In doing so, Leo responded to decades of calls by Black American Catholics, activists and scholars for the Holy See to atone for its own role in the colonial-era trade in human beings."

"Officers at Michigan's prison for women have organized crews of women to work overnight stripping, cleaning, waxing and buffing the chow hall floor, two nights in a row, heightening expectations among inmates that inspections or high-level visits are pending.

Several of the women recruited have regular early-morning jobs or classes that they are still expected to show up for, and women were told they would be sent to solitary confinement if they didn't perform the apparently urgent work until 3 a.m. or 4 a.m. Thursday and Friday, inmates Brandy Jensen, Sharon Zachary, and Kelsey Brennan told the Detroit Free Press in separate phone calls May 22."

The 13th Amendment of the US Constitution is how human enslavement was preserved and why mass incarceration in both public and private prisons should be abolished. Congress has the power to end this and that is why our votes matter.

Imagine a world where people have what they need to thrive including education, health care, housing, and a livable income. That world would not be fueled and funded by human enslavement.

Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.
