The Michigan Sheriffs’ Association continues to advocate for moving the office of Sheriff to the nonpartisan section of the ballot and establishing appropriate law enforcement experience requirements for candidates seeking this important office.

MSA Executive Director and former Sheriff Matt Saxton recently joined Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard and Ingham County Sheriff Scott Wriggelsworth for a discussion on why these changes are important for the future of the Office of Sheriff in Michigan.

More than 90% of Michigan Sheriffs Republicans and Democrats, support this effort.

The Office of Sheriff should be about experience, qualifications, leadership, and public safety, not partisan politics.

Please join the Kent County Sheriff’s Office in congratulating Jason Kelley on his promotion to Undersheriff!

Undersheriff Kelley began his career with KCSO in 2003 as a County Patrol Officer. Over more than two decades of service, he has progressed through nearly every level of leadership within the Enforcement Division. His career has included extensive time in the Investigative Division, along with leadership roles as Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain, and most recently Chief Deputy.

Throughout his career, Jason has developed a leadership style centered around people. He is approachable, genuine, and intentional about building relationships with those around him. Regardless of rank or assignment, he makes time for conversation, listens to different perspectives, and remains invested in the employees doing the work each day.

Those who know Jason also know his sense of humor is never far away. He understands when the job demands seriousness, but also recognizes the value of laughter, connection, and creating an environment where people enjoy working together. That balance has made him a trusted leader and someone employees genuinely enjoy working alongside.

As Undersheriff, Jason will join Sheriff Appointee Bryan Muir as Sheriff Michelle LaJoye-Young transitions into retirement and KCSO prepares to begin an exciting new chapter. Together, they bring decades of experience, fresh perspectives, and a shared commitment to employees and the community we serve.

With a new Sheriff and leadership team taking shape, this transition is an opportunity to build on the strong foundation already in place while continuing to move KCSO forward. Their focus will remain on investing in our people and community, embracing new ideas, and pushing our organization even further above the standard in our commitment to excellence and service to Kent County.

Sheriff Michelle LaJoye-Young and Undersheriff Bryan Muir (Sheriff appointee) are proud the announce the promotion of John DeGroot to Chief Deputy of the Enforcement Division!

Chief Deputy DeGroot began his career with KCSO in 2004 as a County Patrol Officer. Over more than two decades of service, he has gained extensive experience throughout the agency, including assignments in the Investigative Division, 15 years on the TAC Team, and leadership roles in Community Services, Animal Control Supervisor, and Support Services. He was promoted to Sergeant in 2017, Lieutenant in 2022, and Captain of Support Services in 2025.

Throughout more than two decades of service, John has earned the respect of those around him through his calm demeanor, thoughtful decision-making, humility, and steady leadership. His extensive experience across the organization has prepared him well to lead the Enforcement Division.

Congratulations, Chief Deputy DeGroot. We are proud to have you leading the Enforcement Division and helping shape the next chapter of the Kent County Sheriff’s Office.

Today, the Kent County Sheriff Appointment Committee appointed Undersheriff Bryan Muir to serve as the next Sheriff of Kent County.

Muir will officially assume the role of Sheriff on October 9, 2026, as Sheriff Michelle LaJoye-Young transitions into retirement following decades of dedicated service.

Undersheriff Muir has served with the Kent County Sheriff’s Office since 2001, building a career that has included assignments and leadership roles in Road Patrol, the Investigative Division, Support Services, the TAC Team and TAC Team Commander, and the Underwater Search and Recovery Team supervisor. Throughout his career, he has risen through the ranks of Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain, Chief Deputy of Law Enforcement Operations, and Undersheriff. His service has earned numerous recognitions, including being selected by his peers as the 2016 Law Enforcement Deputy of the Year.

Muir holds a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Grand Valley State University and a Master’s degree in Public Administration. He is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy, the Michigan State University School of Staff and Command, Leadership Grand Rapids, and the Grand Rapids Leadership Institute.

Undersheriff Muir said he is grateful for the opportunity and excited to take on this new role. He looks forward to continuing to serve the men and women of the Sheriff’s Office and the residents of Kent County as Sheriff.
