Lancaster County First Steps

Lancaster County First Steps We ensure all Lancaster County children start school ready to reach their highest potential More than 90% of a child's brain develops between birth and age 5.

By the time a child starts school, most of the critical connections between brain cells are formed and the "hard-wiring" is done. For example, the skills needed to be a good reader, like language and vocabulary, start developing from birth. The early years are the best opportunity for a child's brain to develop the connections they need to be healthy, capable, successful adults. Lancaster County F

irst Steps helps families and childcare providers give young children the best possible start. We are the only dedicated and comprehensive early childhood nonprofit in Lancaster County focused solely on getting children from birth to age 5 ready for school and life success. We serve nearly 2,200 children across the county each year, providing programs and services that improve children's health, strengthen families, expand access to quality childcare, support literacy, increase participation in 4K programs, and help rising kindergartners transition into school.
