Parents and caregivers, let’s come together for connection, support, and a conversation that could help save a life.

Our Supporting Parents/Guardians Raising Black African American Children With Autism support group will feature a presentation from the Drowning Prevention Coalition! 🌊

Drowning can happen in seconds and is often silent. Water safety is especially important for families raising children with autism, who may need additional precautions around water. Close supervision, barriers around pools, and swimming and water-safety skills are important layers of protection.

Come learn, ask questions, and connect with other families. Together, we can become better informed and better prepared to keep our children safe. 💙

Today, I had the opportunity to ask questions of Mr. Jolly, a candidate who could become Florida’s next governor. As the founder of both Candys Birthing & Family Services and Candy’s Cause, I’m grateful for opportunities to advocate for families raising children with disabilities and ensure our voices are heard. 💙

In true Autism Auntie fashion, I asked about funding and resources for respite care. Our families are stressed, and caregivers need opportunities to rest, recharge, and care for themselves. Respite is a need, not a luxury.

While he did not offer a specific plan for respite care or several other concerns raised today, including the educational needs of children with disabilities, I hope our questions helped deepen his understanding of the challenges Florida families face. Today was an opportunity to listen, learn, and bring our families’ experiences into the conversation.

Thank you, Yolanda, for hosting this important discussion and creating space for our community to be heard.

Mr. Jolly, I hope our families made a lasting impression—and that, should you take office, you remember the concerns shared today. As you develop your proposed Florida educational renaissance, families raising children with disabilities deserve a seat at the table and a meaningful role in shaping the decisions that affect our children.

Our voices matter. Our children matter. And our families deserve meaningful support.

A new month brings fresh opportunities to care for ourselves, support our neighbors, and make a difference—one act of kindness at a time.

At Candy’s Cause, we believe every family deserves support, every voice deserves to be heard, and everyone deserves a place to belong. This month, let’s turn that belief into action: share a helpful resource, check on a friend, speak up for someone, or simply make time to listen. 🤎

As you pour into others, remember that you deserve care, too. Give yourself permission to rest, ask for help, and celebrate your progress.

🚨 PARENTS, KNOW THIS: THE “SNEAKY SEND-HOME” MAY BE AN INFORMAL REMOVAL! 🚨

Thank you to our friend Yolanda of Strong Parents Strong Voices for sharing this important information with families. 💛

Has your child’s school ever called and said:

❌ “Come pick up your child.”
❌ “Your child cannot return until we have a meeting.”
❌ “We aren’t suspending them—we just think they should go home.”

Do not let softer wording keep you from documenting what happened. When a school directs you to pick up your child or prevents your child from returning, it may count as a disciplinary removal—even if the school does not call it a suspension.

Parents, respond by saying:

📝 “Please confirm in writing that the school is directing me to remove my child. Include the reason, the time the removal began, when my child may return, and how this absence will be recorded.”

Then remember to:

📧 Send a follow-up email immediately.
📝 Document every pickup and every hour of missed instruction.
📂 Request copies of all disciplinary paperwork.
🗓️ Keep a running total of removal days and hours.
💬 Ask how your child’s missed instruction and services will be addressed.

Our children deserve access to their education, and parents deserve clear and accurate records. Please share this information with another family—too many parents experience these removals without knowing what they are called or how to document them.

Parents and guardians raising Black and African American children with autism—please join us tomorrow, September 16, from 6:00–7:00 PM for a virtual evening of support, encouragement, connection, and helpful resources.

This month, we are excited to welcome Every Mother’s Advocate! They will share information about their resources and advocacy efforts to support mothers and strengthen families.

Whether you are seeking resources, looking for a supportive community, or simply need a safe space with families who understand the journey, we would love to have you join us. Please invite a friend or another parent who may benefit!

🎉 A small win that feels HUGE: This was the first week my son made it to school without receiving a tardy!

Starting high school can be challenging for any student, but the transition can bring additional hurdles for a neurodiverse teen. My son moves at his own pace—and some mornings, that pace is extra slow! 😂 But we’ve been communicating, adjusting our routine, and trying different strategies. I think he’s finally finding his stride.

I also reached out to his teachers to introduce myself, establish open communication, and confirm that his 504 Plan is being implemented. I truly believe that advocacy and collaboration have helped. His grades are improving, and I’m hopeful that we can keep moving in a positive direction.

A few reminders for parents navigating a similar journey:

💙 Celebrate progress—even when it seems small.
💙 Connect with teachers before there is a problem.
💙 Review your child’s 504 Plan or IEP and ask how accommodations are being provided.
💙 Create morning routines with alarms, checklists, and extra transition time.
💙 Ask your teen what is making things difficult instead of assuming.
💙 Focus on solutions, consistency, and encouragement—not perfection.
💙 Teach your child how to advocate for themselves, one step at a time.

To every parent working through tardies, missing assignments, low grades, forgotten items, slow mornings, and teenage attitudes: You are not alone! We are all learning, adjusting, advocating, and doing the best we can.

One good week can become two—and one small victory can build the confidence needed for the next one. Let’s keep going! 🙌🏾
