Welcome to a new segment we're calling: FAQs! aka Frequently Asked Questions❓You want to know and we can't wait to tell you!

We get this question a lot from newcomers looking to utilize the Compost Facility: "I heard y'all have free compost! How do I get it?!" 🚜

Here's your answer: "If you have an open top truck or trailer, we can use our machinery to load up the compost for you. If you don't have a truck or trailer, you can still receive compost but you will have to load the compost yourself into a bag or tote, just make sure to bring a shovel! Whatever vehicle you will be picking up compost in, make sure to air up the tires - Compost is heavy, and once it's on, it's on! Now you're ready to drive out to the Dean Domingues Compost Facility at 400 Dugas Rd. Lafayette, LA 70507. Drive to the back, go through the gate, and stop at the window to let someone know you're there to get compost. They'll guide you from there and carefully drop a scoop on your trailer or into your truck bed. That's it!"

Thanks for asking y’all! 🙂

Balloon releases are just littering en masse. Consider blowing bubbles, scattering dried flower petals or leaves, or holding pinwheels or ribbon wands.

The Legislature passed a bill that classifies balloon releases as "intentional littering" and sets criminal penalties for violations.

June 1st is here and did you know? June is National Ocean Month! 🌊

Lafayette isn't a coastal town but we're a lot closer to the ocean than we think thanks to bayous, ditches, storm drains, coulees, and the Vermilion! If you didn't learn it in school you probably heard it in Finding Nemo, 🐠 "All drains lead to the ocean" and that is especially true for storm drains. We should never dump anything into the storm drain, it's only for rainwater.

Remember, what we do on the land directly affects our waterways, even the ocean!

Are you picking up litter? 🚯

Maybe you and a group of friends or your office staff get out at least 4 times a year or more to pick up litter in your neighborhood or the street that your office is on. If this sounds like you, you'd be a wonderful partner for our "Embrace This Space" program!

🫂 Embrace This Space gives you the tools, the encouragement, and the recognition for caring for your community right where you are every day. You choose the area you want to clean up regularly, and if needed, we can offer you litter picking supplies as well as trash pickup on the day of your cleanup. After you report your first cleanup, we install a sign in your Embraced Space that tells everyone "My Group Embraces This Space!"

We want to see more Lafayette spaces being embraced, so reach out today to get started! 📩Email [email protected] or 📞call us at 337 291 5637

Water quality is so important, and it's heavily affected by what we do on the LAND! Remember to pick up your dog waste, don't blow grass clippings or leaves into the storm drains, and pick up litter!

Happy Water Quality Wednesday!💙

One of the several water quality parameters we measure is Dissolved Oxygen which is the measurement of oxygen present in the water sample. This is a critical measurement because aquatic organisms like fish, crawfish, mussels, dragonfly larvae, and aquatic plants rely on oxygen to survive.

When dissolved oxygen levels get too low, aquatic life can become stressed or even die. Factors like high water temperatures, excess nutrients (such as fertilizer runoff), and stagnant water can all contribute to low dissolved oxygen levels.

A typical minimum for healthy dissolved oxygen is 5 mg/L. Stay tuned as we continue sharing more about the water quality indicators that help us better understand our watershed!
