Here at Community Defense, we see Juneteenth as a celebration of the Fight for Freedom. But that very fight continues today.
In every courtroom, we fight against systems that were designed to re enslave our people through injustice. This is happening every day across America, from disproportionate sentencing to the criminalization of poverty, mental health, and addiction. With glaring statistics showing that approximately 67% to 78% of recorded exonerations since 1989 involve people of color, the disparities within the system remain impossible to ignore.
Our fight goes even further, to where many of these pipelines begin from the classroom to the home where systems build cages based on third grade reading levels.
The fight for true liberation and freedom is not over, and as the system has transformed decade after decade, so must abolition.
We believe in community and an ecosystem that can provide for and protect itself. Community watch becomes community witness, and surveillance is replaced by relationship.
More than anything, we believe in community. We hope for a community that judges less and supports more.
Our core group is made up of people with different beliefs who come from different generations and backgrounds, but we all share a fundamental core belief: that everyone deserves equal justice and the right, access, and opportunity to fulfill their destiny without oppression and racism.
So today, we honor the freedom fighters who continue to fight. We honor those who organize, advocate, care for their communities, challenge injustice, and refuse to give up on the promise of liberation.
Continue your fight, because at the core of it all, this is one of the primary fights for freedom and liberation within this country.
Fight on. Fight strong.
And Keep Pushing!!
