A South Carolina pastor is going viral on X after a fiery Sunday sermon left some members of his congregation visibly uncomfortable and sparked a heated debate across social media.

Rev. Brett Martin was preaching about what he described as Christianity’s long history of people ā€œputting things in the Bible that aren’t thereā€ in order to justify their own beliefs or gain power over other people.

Then Martin took the sermon in a direction few in the congregation apparently expected.

ā€œYou know what else ain’t in the Bible? White people!ā€ Martin preached. ā€œWhite folks ain’t in the Bible! I know we’ve given everybody white names, painted white pictures and made Bible movies with white actors, but ain’t none of the folks in the Bible Caucasian.ā€

Martin then challenged his predominantly white congregation to examine what he called their ā€œracism meter.ā€

ā€œIf you really want to check your racism meter, ask yourself this: Would you have followed Christianity if Jesus—and everybody else in the Bible—had been presented to you as non-white from the very beginning?ā€

He continued: ā€œAnd ask yourself why, when we know better now, some of you still need that picture of a white Jesus hanging in your church or your house. Maybe somewhere inside, you’re saying, ā€˜The only way I can fully embrace Christianity is if Christianity looks like me.’ That’s what whitewashing does. It makes you comfortable.ā€

Then came the line that sent the clip across social media:

ā€œSome folks wouldn’t even let a person of color be their doctor. I know you wouldn’t let one be your Savior. If Jesus came back today looking like He did back then, how many of you would accept Him? Or would you grab your purse or lock your doors waiting on a blonde haired blue eyes Savior?ā€

Martin reportedly went on to clarify that his point was not that white Christians were incapable of sincerely following Jesus, but that Christians should be willing to separate their faith from racial imagery and traditions that were added centuries later.

Clips from the August 2026 sermon quickly spread online, with some viewers praising Martin for confronting race from the pulpit while others, and some who even claimed to be personally connected accused him of unnecessarily injecting race into Christianity and forcefully urging him to quickly delete the post/video they believe is causing division.

The University of Tennessee at Knoxville is issuing a campus safety notice following multiple reports of sexual assault and drugging over the weekend.

UTK officials say they've received several reports regarding four separate incidents that occurred between Friday, Aug. 28, and Sunday, Aug. 30. Three of the reports detailed sexual assaults, and two included allegations of suspected drugging, at on-campus fraternity houses.

ā€œEvery sexual assault incident is different for each individual, and the university supports and respects the decisions made by the students involved on how they wish to proceed,ā€ the university’s statement said.

The university is urging students affected by these incidents or who have experienced sexual assault to utilize available support networks.

On-campus private support is available through the Office of Title IX. For confidential off-campus support, students can reach out to the Sexual Assault Center of East Tennessee. The university also offers mental and emotional health support resources through its student counseling centers.
