This lady just turned 116 yrs old - she is the oldest person in the United States, and second oldest human on earth.

Naomi Whitehead was born when Harriet Tubman was still alive.

That sentence alone makes 116 years almost impossible to comprehend.

Born Naomi Washington on September 26, 1910, she grew up on a Georgia farm, picking cotton and to***co.

American women did not yet have the constitutional right to vote nationwide.

World War I had not begun.

Commercial radio had not arrived.

And Harriet Tubman still had nearly three years left to live.

On September 26, 2026, Naomi celebrated her 116th birthday.

Her validated age makes her the oldest known living person in the United States and the second-oldest known living person in the world.

But behind that extraordinary number is an ordinary life stretched across an extraordinary amount of history.

Naomi married Sylvester Whitehead in 1930.

They had three sons.

Then the decades kept coming.

She lived through the Great Depression.

World War II.

The civil rights movement.

The moon landing.

Television entering American homes.

Personal computers.

The internet.

Smartphones.

She was already 45 when Rosa Parks refused to surrender her bus seat in Montgomery.

She was 98 when Barack Obama was elected the first Black president of the United States.

But living this long also meant experiencing enormous loss.

Naomi outlived her husband.

Then she outlived all three of her sons.

Her last surviving son died in 2011, when Naomi herself was already 100.

Still, new generations continued growing around her.

By her 110th birthday, her family included grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and even great-great-great-grandchildren.

Think about the distance contained inside one lifetime.

A woman living through more than a century of enormous technological and social change.

And finally, in Pennsylvania in 2026, a 116-year-old surrounded by generations that came after her.

Naomi Whitehead didn't learn about the last century from a history book.

She lived through it.

The George Foundation is proud to welcome this year’s Excellence for Nonprofit Leadership (ENL) class, with 52 nonprofit partners enrolled.

The class recently gathered for a Welcome Reception at The George Ranch Visitor Center and will officially kick off with its Opening Retreat, September 29 through October 1

Established in 2002, ENL is an eight-session program designed to strengthen nonprofit leadership through strategic and technical support in areas including governance, organizational planning, fundraising, and workforce development.

We look forward to seeing the connections, ideas, and impact this year’s class will build across Fort Bend County.
