After six weeks of radiation treatment for tongue cancer, Kim is headed home to Clever, Missouri. 💛

A mom of seven and proud Noni to her grandchildren, Kim brought a little extra warmth to Babe’s Place through her love of knitting. Throughout her stay, she made potholders and tissue holders that others around the Inn were lucky enough to receive. A beautiful reminder that even while navigating her own journey, Kim found ways to care for others.

As she checked out, Kim left us a note that we’ll hold close:

“My 6 week stay here was so calming, quiet and peaceful - it was exactly what I needed during this part of my journey.”

As we celebrate one year of welcoming families to Babe’s Place at Friendship Inn, we’re reminded that behind every number is a family navigating a medical journey, a loved one receiving treatment, and a moment of rest when it’s needed most.

In our first year, we’ve provided a home away from home for 773 patients and families, with an average stay of five nights. From a quiet place to recharge to the comfort of knowing they have a safe place to return to, these moments matter.

To our donors, volunteers and community partners: thank you for making this possible. 💙 You’ve helped turn a building into a place of comfort, connection, and care. And we’re just getting started!

Some of the most meaningful moments at Friendship Inn are the quiet ones. This morning, a couple was sharing breakfast and a few peaceful minutes together before heading back to the hospital.

When families are walking through difficult days, the mental load can feel overwhelming. Having a safe, comfortable place to rest and recharge can make that load a little lighter.

At Friendship Inn, we believe healing is supported not only by the excellent medical care The University of Kansas Health System, but also by moments of connection, comfort and calm. It might not be home, but it should feel like it. ❤️

We are so thankful to US Foods in Lenexa for packing snack bags for families at Friendship Inn! It is so nice to have something quick and easy when you're heading over to the hospital for a long day of appointments and treatments, and they are the perfect fit for our new grab and go station. Huge thanks to US Foods for making a difference for families navigating serious medical journeys.

Who doesn't love a before (left) and after? Thank you to Clark & Enersen and their team who took time and a ton of thoughtful preparation to expand our kitchen and build this beautiful coffee and grab and go station for the families staying at Friendship Inn. What used to be a seldom-used sitting space became a very functional area thanks to some special folks!

Materials kindly donated by Keystone Solid Surfaces - Lee's Summit, Cambria, Ferguson of Lenexa, The Home Depot, and Lowe's Home Improvement of Kansas City.

After more than a month at Friendship Inn, Ron and Rena are heading home!

Rena has completed her cancer treatment at KU, and while we are so happy to see them take this next step, saying goodbye is bittersweet. During their time here, Ron and Rena became so much more than guests. They became part of the Friendship Inn family; always looking for a way to help. Whether it was installing a shower head, lending a hand around the house, or simply sitting in the kitchen and listening to another guest who needed an ear, they gave so much of themselves to the people around them.

That is what makes Friendship Inn special. Families arrive here in some of the hardest seasons of their lives, but along the way, they find connection, community and sometimes even a little family.

We will definitely miss Ron and Rena, but we are so grateful they became part of ours. ❤️

After 78 days at Friendship Inn, Norma is going home. ❤️

Today was a special kind of goodbye at Friendship Inn as Norma headed home to Dodge City after spending 78 days with us while recovering from a bone marrow transplant for aplastic anemia. Because her care required her to remain close to the The University of Kansas Health System, Friendship Inn became her home away from home, but her kids took turns being by her side throughout her long recovery.

Norma found that cooking was one of the best ways to pass the time during recovery, and she loved sharing her creations with the other families (and staff!) staying here. The delicious smells she created in the kitchen were 10/10!

Today, her son Omar drove Norma home, and while we’re going to miss her dearly, we’re so happy to see her finally heading back to her own home and her family after such a long road. Norma, we’re cheering you on all the way home! 💕

Some days a sweet treat can turn the day around 🍩
In the midst of a really difficult season, Ron and Larena found themselves craving something sweet — and thanks to a very thoughtful donation from Blackhole Bakery, there were plenty of donuts and pastries to go around.

We’re so grateful for the kindness that finds its way to Friendship Inn and for the little moments of comfort, joy and normalcy it creates for the families staying with us.
