Medical Arts Symphony

Medical Arts Symphony The Medical Arts Symphony, Inc. is a non-profit organization which provides free performances for the Kansas City metro area.

The Medical Arts Symphony began in 1959 when Eleanor Sharp and some of her colleagues at the University of Kansas Medical Center decided to share their avocation, symphonic music, with their profession, health care. Since its founding, the Symphony has not wavered from its dual mission of providing an opportunity for amateur musicians to perform great works of Western music and enriching the cultu

ral life of Kansas City by presenting free concerts that frequently feature first performances of works by local composers. For thirty years, the orchestra was conducted by Leopold Shopmaker, who was succeeded by Merton Shatzkin in 1989. John Bell began as Associate Conductor in January, 2012, and served as Music Director and Conductor from September, 2013 until May, 2015. Steve Lewis is the current Music Director.

Fun fact: Mozart's Coronation Mass does not include a viola part because there wasn't enough room for violas where the orchestra played in the cathedral. We wanted to include our violas in our upcoming performance, so our principal viola Bob Hagenbuch Jr Composer created a part for them. Thanks, Bob! 🎻

Join us on April 17th at 7:30PM at Yardley Hall at JCCC for a truly unique (and free!) performance of this festive work! 👑

A look back at exactly 3 weeks ago this evening, when the orchestra performed its final concert at the University of Kansas Medical Center on 2/14/26, as the Student Center the auditorium is housed in, is slated for demolition later this summer. Photos are from the pre-concert talk with Carolyn Brewer, the concert itself, and a post-concert photo of the dark stage after the lights were turned off for the last time. 🎶🎻📸
