70-year-old Francis Romero was in a coma in hospital. His dog was allowed to stay with him, and did not leave him day or night. After a month Francis woke up from the coma with the words:
"Where is the white angel who constantly whispered that everything would be all right?"

September 4th: (& the Saturday after the Feast of St. Augustine) for Augustinians: the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of Consolation.

We salute you Mary, Queen of heaven and earth, Mother of Consolation. Mindful of the power with which Jesus your Son has blessed you, we implore your protection as the source of all true consolation. After the trials and sorrows of our life's pilgrimage, you can console your children with the glory of which you are the dispenser and with the joys of paradise of which you are the gate. May our poor efforts to love you, dearest Mother, be helped by your more than maternal care. Deign then to listen to your children's prayer, and grant us the grace that we ask in this Novena...(pause) O Mother of Consolation, grant that, under your care and protection, we may reach the home of eternal rest, where we may for ever bless your Divine Son. Amen.

O Mary, Mother of Consolation: pray for your children.

Today we celebrate St. Augustine, a bishop and doctor of the Church, and a man whose spiritual journey is one of the most famous and inspiring.

For there was a time where St. Augustine’s soul seemed lost beyond saving, but in the end the love of Christ and the heart of his mother won the day.

St. Augustine was born in Tagaste, part of the Roman Empire, in the year 354 AD.

He was born to a pagan father who was baptized only at the end of his life, and a Catholic mother, St. Monica.

From the very beginning of his life his heart was torn in two directions, the worldly path set out by his father, and a life of virtue and devotion set out by his mother.

For a time the worldly side of his heart led him to sin.

When he went to study in Carthage his great academic success became a point of pride and temptation.

He was surrounded by sinful influences and he struggled greatly with temperance and chastity.

Even his intellect fell away from the Lord and for nine years he studied and defended Manichaeism. But all was not lost.

St. Monica never ceased to love and pray for her son and husband. She did everything she could to guide them to the Lord.

Eventually, empowered by the grace of God which came from her prayers, and with the influence of St. Ambrose, St. Augustine had a moment of clarity and conviction.

After his famous repentance in the garden at Milan, St. Augustine became a zealous disciple of Christ and one of the greatest bishops and theologians the Church has ever had!

The life of St. Augustine and St. Monica offers us great hope and consolation.

We too live in a world where the hearts of so many, including our own loved ones, are torn between the world and the kingdom of God.

But we have a mother whose heart is even more loving than St. Monica’s; we have the very heart of Mary Immaculate to take refuge in!

Let us then follow the example of St. Monica and the guidance of Our Lady and pray the Rosary for the world, for our families, and for ourselves.

So that by the grace of God we may be like St. Augustine and let go of the sin that remains in our heart and instead find our true rest in the Lord.

St. Augustine, pray for us!

May 22: The feast of Saint Rita of Cascia: Augustinian Nun, patroness of impossible cases:

 Let us pray:
O God, Who in Thine infinite tenderness hast vouchsafed to regard the prayer of Thy servant, Blessed Rita, and dost grant to her supplication that which is impossible to human foresight, skill and efforts, in reward of her compassionate love and firm reliance on Thy promise, have pity on our adversity and succor us in our calamities, that the unbeliever may know Thou art the recompense of the humble, the defense of the helpless, and the strength of those who trust in Thee, through Jesus Christ, Our Lord. Amen.

All Saints of the Augustinian Order

November 13

On this day, the birthday of Saint Augustine (354), Augustinians celebrate not only those members of the Order who have been formally recognized by the Church as Saint or Blessed, but all those Friars and Sisters who, throughout the ages, have been made holy by the blood of Jesus Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit.

In this celebration we give thanks and praise to God for the many gifts of holiness so richly found in the Order of Saint Augustine.

We also renew our commitment to walk in the footsteps of so many brothers and sisters who followed so closely the Way of the Gospel according to the ideals of religious community life taught by Augustine.

October 25: St. John Stone, Martyr
St. John Stone belonged to the Canterbury house of the Augustinian Order. Little is known of his early life. In November 1534 parliament ratified the Act of Supremacy which declared the king to be the only supreme head of the Church in England. Henry VIII formally assumed the title on 1st. February 1535. The Act of Supremacy was quickly followed by the Treason Act, enjoining the penalty of high treason on those who might desire to deprive the king of his title: supreme head of the Church. All clerics were required to sign a document explicitly acknowledging Henry VIII as head of the church in England. Richard Ingworth, a signer of the document, who had been a Dominican friar, had been made Bishop of Dover. On Saturday, 14th December 1538 Ingworth visited Canterbury and called on the Augustinian Friary with an order to close it down. Every friar was forced to sign a formal document agreeing to the Act. John Stone refused to sign. In his report to Cromwell Ingworth described his meeting with John: ‘Being in the Austin friars there the 14th day of December, one Friar there very rudely and traitorously used himself before all the company as by a bill here enclosed you shall perceive part. To write half his words and order there it were too long to write. I perceiving his demeanour straight sequestered him so that none spoke with him. I sent for the mayor and ere that he came I examined him before master Spilman and also afterwards before the mayor and master Spilman and at all times he still held and still will die for it that the King
may not be head of the Church of England, but it must be a spiritual father appointed by God.’

John Stone was sent to London to languish in the Tower for months. On 27th October 1539 a commission of 'Oyer et Terminer' (Hear and Determine) was addressed to the Mayor of Canterbury and four others. So, Friar Stone was
sent back to Canterbury to be tried for treason, the penalty being death. While awaiting trial, Friar Stone was kept in the cell of Canterbury Castle. John's friend, Nicholas Harpsfield, relates the following details: ‘Having poured forth prayers to God in prison and fasted continuously for three days he heard a voice though he saw no one, which addressed him by name and bade him to be of good heart and not to hesitate to suffer death with constancy for the belief which he had professed. From which afterwards he gained such eagerness and strength as never to allow himself by persuasion or terror to be drawn from his purpose.’

We do not know the exact date of John Stone's trial in December 1539, but it would appear to have been before Christmas. The presiding judges made it a very short trial. A jury confronted with an indictment for High Treason had no alternative but to find the defendant guilty. John Stone was taken to Westgate to await his ex*****on. In order to show to the people that he was an exceptional criminal the ex*****on took place on a prominent hill inside the city walls; and no expense was spared in the preparations so as to ensure maximum publicity. Friar John was dragged from Westgate to Dane John Hill. The choice of Dane John meant that, as John stood on the scaffold, he saw his beloved Augustinian Friary, now barred and empty. He was hanged, drawn and quartered. The Traditional date of his martyrdom is May 12, 1540, but many modern authors suggest that it took place on
Saturday, 27th December 1539. St. John Stone was beatified by Pope Leo XIII on 9th December, 1886 and was canonized as one of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales by Pope Paul VI in 1970. St. John Stone is a Catholic priest who chose death rather than go against his conscience and his commitment to the Sacred Magisterium of the Church.

September 22 - Blessed Josefa de la Purificación Masià Ferragut
Blessed Josefa da la Purificacion Masia Ferragut, discalced Augustinian nun, martyr.

Blessed Josefa, the Augustinian nun whom we remember today, was one of a family of four daughters - all religious - who together with their aged mother, were martyred for the faith in 1936 during the civil strife in Spain. They were united not only by blood and by faith but also by their steadfast commitment to Christ and the Church even to the sacrifice of their lives.

Blessed Josefa was born in Algemesí (Valencia), Spain on June 10, 1887. She made her profession in the monastery of the Discalced Augustinians of Benigánim on February 3, 1906, where she later served as prioress and mistress of novices. During the religious persecutions of the time, the Archdiocese of Valencia paid a great price in the lives of priests, men and women of Catholic Action of various ages, and several hundred religious from many religious institutes. When finally forced to abandon her convent, Josefa, together with her sisters, Vicenta, Joaquina, and Maria Felicidad who were Capuchin Nuns, took refuge in the home of their eighty-three year old mother, Maria Teresa Farragut. Here all five sought to live an authentic monastic life of prayer, recollection and silence over a period of several months until they were taken to the prison of Fons Salutis, a former Cistercian Monastery which had been converted into a jail. They were executed on October 25, 1936. On March 11, 2001 they were among 233 religious men and women, priests and lay persons whom Pope John Paul II beatified in Saint Peter’s Square. The remains of these five members of a single family are venerated in the parish church of Saint Pius X in Algemesí.

The capacity to offer the supreme sacrifice of one’s life through martyrdom flows from the complete consecration of self in baptism and religious profession, when these are embraced with total dedication and sincerity. Josefa, her sisters and their mother, united not only by the bond of blood but also by their common witness to the faith in the face of persecution, give striking evidence of the depth of their conviction and their commitment to Christ
