The work was never the name on the building.

At the end of this year, the Community Action of Southern Indiana page will retire. The programs and services families count on are continuing with OVO, and that’s where you’ll find updates, events, and news from here on out.

Spotted in one of our Head Start classrooms: the Turtle Technique 🐢

When big feelings show up, our kids have a plan:

Recognize your feelings.
Stop your body.
Tuck inside your shell and take three deep breaths.
Come out when you’re calm and think of a solution.

It comes from the Pyramid Model, which our teachers use to help children name their emotions and work through them. It’s also worth trying at home, and honestly, it works pretty well for grown-ups too.

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Debra Gaetano, who led CASI's Head Start program as Director from 2010 to 2021.

Her love for children and her community showed in everything she did. Many of the families we serve today are better off because of the foundation she helped lay.

Visitation will be Wednesday, October 28, from 12 to 8 p.m. at Naville & Seabrook Funeral Home, 1119 E. Market St., New Albany. The funeral will be Thursday, October 29, at 11 a.m. at Christ Gospel Church, 2614 E. 10th St., Jeffersonville, with visitation from 10 to 11 a.m. In Debra’s honor, the family asks guests to wear her favorite color, red.

The best way to get to know someone? Over a meal, of course!

As CASI and OVO work side by side, we’re making time to get to know each other beyond the meeting agendas. This week our Board members gathered for a mixer, and our Head Start leadership teams shared a meal, swapped stories, and talked about what matters most: the children and families we serve.

The people in these photos care deeply about this community. We’re grateful to be doing this work together. 💛

Congratulations to Pamela Clark, one of this year’s recipients of the Spirit of the Red Ribbon award from Our Place Drug & Alcohol Education Services, Inc.

This award honors people who make prevention and community health a priority, and Pamela does that every day. As our Director of Health Programs, Pam has spent decades championing health equity.

We were proud to be there to celebrate her. Thank you to Our Place for recognizing the people doing this work, and congratulations to all of this year’s honorees.

A big step this month. The Office of Head Start officially named Ohio Valley Opportunities (OVO) as the new recipient of our Head Start and Early Head Start award.

For families, that means your child’s classroom, teachers, and routine stay the same. Head Start continues under OVO starting January 1, 2027, and there’s nothing you need to do.

Decisions on our state-funded programs, including Housing Choice Vouchers and Weatherization, are still with IHCDA. We’ll share news as soon as we have it.

Halloween in Harrison County 🎃

Harrison County showed up last week! We had a great time at our Halloween Resource fair, with costumes, candy, and a lot of happy kids. A big thank you to every family who came out and every volunteer who made it happen.

We also loved joining our friends at Lincoln Hills Development Corporation for trunk or treat. Events like these are a reminder of how many people in this county work to make it a great place to grow up.
