This is Momma Blossom! 🌸
She joined us Wednesday morning from an over crowded shelter in Jackson County, IN. Blossom ended up at the shelter just the day before(Tuesday) and shelter staff could tell she was about to pop. That’s when they contacted us! We got Blossom into a foster home and the next 24 hours were a whirlwind.
Everyone knew Blossom was ready to pop, we just didn’t realize she was ready to pop immediately!
When Blossom arrived at her foster home, she was very nippy, nervous and unsure. Unfortunately, she came from a hoarding type situation and her exposure to the outside world was little to none. When getting her weight checked, foster mom noticed she was shaking. It was hard to tell if this was nerves or signs of labor. Momma was 25.1lbs! She got started on a dewormer, was given a capstar for fleas, got her nails trimmed and met the resident dogs. We were told she opened up best around other dogs, and they were right! She enjoyed being around the other dogs.
About an hour after being outside(this foster family really enjoys sitting outside with the dogs), her foster mom noticed her shaking again. That’s when it kicked in, this was really happening TODAY! Foster momma left to get a brand new baby pool(thank you meijers for being prepared for summer already!!), deep cleaned a spare bedroom and got everything ready for momma.
Around 8pm, momma started to get the urge to push. When it’s almost time to deliver, mommas typically will try to pee/poo very frequently because of this. Momma stayed in her room nesting, getting everything ready for her pups. Nesting, panting and restlessness until 230am. At 230am momma had her first puppy, Bud. At 315am, the second pup(Drizzle) was born.
While watching the camera, foster mom fell asleep around 4am. Apparently momma did too!
When everyone woke up at 720am, momma had not given birth to the 3rd puppy. At this time, we didn’t know how many there was. Things progressed very quickly from the moment we got her from the shelter and we didn’t have time to get her to the vet. However, we knew she had more than 2. Her poor big belly told us she had 5 or more.
Momma didn’t seem to be taking care of the pups and was lethargic. Some puppy poops were nearby that she hadn’t cleaned up….just very unlike a momma dog. A call was made to the vet and they asked us to bring her in for a c section! We got to the clinic, got momma all checked in(she stayed in the car with the puppies) and she decided she was going to have the 3rd one while waiting at the clinic!! LOL. Tulip ended up being the only girl! We did still bring momma inside because placenta was still inside at the time and momma didn’t seem to be doing much. Foster mom was able to pull the placenta out while waiting in the room and vet staff cut the cord. Puppies and momma were all checked out and everything seemed to be good! Momma had an X-ray and there were 3 remaining puppies.
Since momma just had a puppy, vet said to go ahead and take momma home and labor at home, but to check in. Definitely beneficial for momma, she is such a shy/scared girl and being at a 3rd place in 24 hours just didn’t sound good for her.
By the time Blossom arrived back at her foster home, she had given birth to the 4th puppy, a boy, Lander! By this time it was around 10:30am.
Got momma all set back into her bedroom and everything seemed to be looking good. Momma rested until 1pm or so. She had some lunch and water around 130pm. Seemed to be nice and relaxed and we were hoping for another puppy soon…was hoping she was just very exhausted and the nap would get labor started again, but that never happened.
Unfortunately, Blossom never had any progression for the 5th puppy. Lots of back and forth calls with the vet and at 315pm it was decided that momma needed a C-section. She was taken in and both pups were delivered! The 5th puppy was another male, Sunny. A tiny little guy. The 6th puppy was a deceased little girl, Peony. 👼🏽
Momma made her way back to her foster home around 10pm and has been resting and taking good care of her pups! She seems to be a great momma.
We are asking for donations for Mommas Emergent C Section! When we took momma, we knew she was from a hoarding type situation with an unknown puppy daddy. Sizing of puppies was unknown and a c section could be needed, but we couldn’t say no based off that. We can’t imagine not having found a foster and momma having to labor in the shelter all while also needing a c section.
If you would like to donate to mommas bill, you can use the link here on the post or our direct venmo/paypal links. If you’d rather donate an item from mommas wishlist, we will add the link. We thank you in advance! We couldn’t do it without you. 🌸🩷
