This Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we honor the generations of Native peoples who have called this land home since long before the founding of our nation, including the Lenape here in New York City.

Their history is an essential part of American history, and their legacy extends well beyond the past. Across our country, Indigenous nations continue to exercise their sovereignty, protect their ancestral lands, preserve their languages, and pass down centuries of knowledge and traditions.

As Americans, we have a responsibility to understand the fullness of our shared history as we take pride in the many cultures that have shaped our nation.

Today, we are proud to join you all in celebrating the Indigenous identity, heritage, and the generations carrying these legacies forward today. Happy Indigenous Peoples’ Day!

We organized. We secured commitments. Now, we’re holding our leaders accountable!

On a rainy Sunday, Save the People proudly joined fellow members of Queens Power and Metro IAF at Queens College for the Mayoral Accountability Assembly, where Mayor Zohran Mamdani shared progress on the commitments he made one year ago, reaffirmed those commitments, and outlined next steps to address some of NYC’s most pressing challenges.

As part of Queens Power, our community joined participants, staff, and community members from Pomonok, Jackson Heights, Corona, Elmhurst, Forest Hills, and beyond to make our voices heard and advocate for the needs of our neighborhoods.

During the assembly, community leaders highlighted the fear and uncertainty facing immigrant families and emphasized the urgent need to protect immigrant New Yorkers as part of the broader goal of keeping all New Yorkers safe.

Mayor Mamdani made several commitments in response to community priorities, including:

🏘️ Affordable Housing: Working with Metro IAF to advance thousands of affordable homes across more than 30 city-owned sites, including pursuing large-scale housing development at Aqueduct.

🏢 NYCHA Repairs: Expanding the Critical Repairs Initiative citywide by June 30, 2027, and holding RAD/PACT developers accountable for housing conditions.

❤️ Mental Health: Committing to launch up to 10 crisis stabilization centers across NYC, beginning in Fiscal Year 2028.

🤝 Community Safety: Renewing commitments to work with community leaders and NYPD leadership on neighborhood safety concerns, including a meeting with the First Deputy Mayor within 30 days.

As community advocates continue to emphasize, the work ahead is about turning commitments into meaningful results for New Yorkers.

At Save the People, we believe our work doesn’t end with securing commitments. We will continue advocating, organizing, and holding our leaders accountable to ensure those commitments translate into real change for the communities we serve.

Inspired by the spirit of the Peace Run 2026, organized by the Sri Chinmoy Centre, we believe that peace begins with each of us and grows through our collective actions.

From advocating for affordable housing and community safety to supporting immigrant families and uplifting our neighborhoods, we remain committed to building stronger communities where everyone feels safe, valued, and respected.

Just as the Peace Run carries a message of harmony across communities, we will continue bringing people together, raising our voices, and working toward meaningful change for all New Yorkers.

Together, let’s keep running toward a future filled with peace, justice, and unity. 🕊️❤️

Save the People CEO Imam Muhammad Shahidullah joined the Faith Leader Election Preparedness & Scenario Planning gathering on behalf of Save the People USA on October 6, 2026, at St. Mark’s Church in-the-Bowery, New York City.

Organized by the Interfaith Center of New York, the gathering brought faith leaders and community partners together for spiritual reflection and interactive planning to strengthen coordination and prepare communities for election-related challenges.

Thank you to Danielle Williams and the organizing team for creating space for dialogue, collaboration, and community preparedness.

Together, we can promote peace, protect our neighbors, and encourage informed civic participation.

🌿♻️ A Successful Community Clean-Up Day! ♻️🌿
Save The People was proud to partner with the Jamaica Hill Community Association for a successful Community Clean-Up Day, bringing volunteers together to help keep our neighborhood clean, safe, and beautiful.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who dedicated their time and energy to making a positive impact. Every bag of litter collected reflects our shared commitment to protecting our environment and strengthening our community.
Together, through service and teamwork, we continue to build cleaner neighborhoods and a brighter future for all.
