Hear from our Executive Director, Carrie Coughlin, as she reflects on what "Beyond Shelter" truly means.

Boston's emergency shelters, Southampton and Woods Mullen, welcome everyone, including those with the most acute needs. For many guests, shelter dining rooms become day shelters — a safe place to be when there is nowhere else to go. That's why our support extends beyond the essentials. While beds, housing assistance, career assistance, and other basic needs are critical, so are the opportunities that bring joy, dignity, and connection whether it's a fashion show, a museum trip, or other experiences that so many of us take for granted.

These moments may seem small, but they can mean so much. They remind people that they are seen, valued, and part of a community during some of the most difficult and traumatic times in their lives.

As we get close to our fiscal year end on June 30, we would appreciate any support you can give. The needs are great and requests for support have tripled this year.

Thank you for being part of Beyond Shelter: Honoring Andrew Marquis.

We are so grateful to our honoree Andrew Marquis, our sponsors, and everyone who attended, volunteered, and supported Friends. Thank you for helping make the afternoon such a success and for helping us continue to increase our support and services for neighbors in need across our community.

A special thank you as well to our incredible keynote speakers — Dr. Jim O’Connell of BHCHP, Chief Sheila Dillon of the Mayor’s Office of Housing, and Lisa DeBarros, Valentine House alumna and current Case Manager, Assistant Coordinator for Behavioral Health at Woods Mullen Shelter.

Yesterday, we came together with 200 friends, partners, longtime supporters, and community members for our Annual Spring Luncheon, Beyond Shelter: Honoring Andrew Marquis.

Our keynote speakers were Dr. Jim O’Connell of BHCHP, Chief Sheila Dillon of the Mayor’s Office of Housing, and Lisa DeBarros, Valentine House alumna and current Case Manager, Assistant Coordinator for Behavioral Health at Woods Mullen Shelter.

Lisa’s speech received a well-deserved standing ovation. To Lisa — thank you. Thank you for sharing your story so openly and courageously. She shared the realities of the deep trauma and pain that so many women at Woods Mullen Emergency Shelter carry with them, sharing, “It’s a dark place in a lot of the hearts of the women there.”

She closed her remarks by saying, “Thank you for everything you are doing for the women and men, they deserve it, they deserve a life too.”

Those words stayed with us. This is why Friends of Boston’s Homeless exists — because a safe place to sleep is just the start.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, volunteered, and supported us. Thank you for being part of that light — helping bring hope, care, and compassion during some of life’s darkest moments to so many lives across our community.

A runway, red carpet, and “I’m Every Woman” on repeat.

We had the best time helping host a spring fashion show at Woods Mullen. Guests walked the runway, hit the red carpet, danced, laughed, and lit up the room.

So grateful to our partners Give n' Glow for providing makeup bags for guests, Covet for sponsoring the event, and to all the volunteers who helped bring it all to life.

Thank you so much to the Red Sox Foundation for making it possible for guests and our program participants to spend an evening at Fenway Park.

For many, it was their first Red Sox game, and getting to see everyone relax, smile, cheer, and just enjoy the night together meant more than we can say. We can’t thank you all enough for this experience.
