DRUM is a community social justice organization of working class South Asians & Indo Caribbeans.

DRUM- Desis Rising Up & Moving, founded in 2000, is a community based social justice organization of working class South Asian & Indo-Caribbean immigrants in NYC. We are immigrants and families affected by detentions and deportations organizing to halt an expanding enforcement system and gain access to legalization, housing, education and economic justice. We build the leadership of low income, undocumented and imprisoned immigrants, youth, and women. Our long term vision is to build power in working class migrant communities rooted in global justice and human rights.

Brazil is no one’s backyard. Not Trump’s. Not the U.S. or Israel’s.

Over the past several months, Trump, the right, and corporations based in the U.S. and around the world have been exerting pressure on Brazil to promote the election of far-right candidate Flavio Bolsonaro over the Workers Party incumbent President Lula.

Bolsonaro is the son of former president Jair Bolsonaro and has received support from the global far right who intend to roll back the social programs and environmental protections that Lula. Bolsonaro threatens an end to Brazilian sovereignty and will hand Brazil over to the U.S. and foreign corporate interests.

All eyes on Brazil and their upcoming election on October 25! The U.S. must stay out of Brazil’s democratic processes.

Over 1,450 people lost their lives in the tragic floods which occured at the Nepal-Tibet border at the end of August. Over 5,500 are still missing. Last Thursday, Nepali PM Balendra Shah addressed the UN General Assembly and spoke to the dire need to take action as the climate crisis worsens.

Nepal contributes less than 0.1% of global emissions, yet is paying a horrific price for a crisis which they have not created. The cost of rebuilding and repair after this disaster is estimated at approximately $5 billion.

The U.S. and other high-emitting countries must meet their moral and legal obligations to Nepal and other Global South countries that are bearing the worst of the climate crisis.

Last Friday, September 25th, over 100+ frontline community members, organizers, activsits and movement leaders from local New York organizations, Indigenous peoples from the so-called US, Global South countries and Europe came together for “What Time Is it? Global Climate Movements Strategy Exchange. About ~40+ DRUM members from across all our bases engaged leading chants, listening exchanges, an anti-imperialist panel with Movement Against Dams and Climate Crisis (MAB/MAR), Friends of the Earth International and Pueblo Action Alliance. There were sharp grassroots internationalist perspectives shared assessments about the shifts in the conjuncture—the compounding crisis of imperialism that threatens and militarizes our homelands and peoples and offers an opportunity for people-to-people organizing for climate justice across the borders. We had dynamic small group discussions and took up the proposal to increase our cooridnation in this next period in defense of our peoples, lands and futures. TOMORROW MORNING 9/23 at 7:30 AM, members of frontline communities and New York’s Nepali diaspora, along with climate justice campaigners, will gather outside UN Headquarters for the “We Demand a Future: Pay Up and Phase Out” rally—hours before world leaders convene for the Secretary-General’s High-Level Event on Climate Action and the Just Transition

Join us to call attention to the recent catastrophic flooding that wiped out entire villages in Nepal; demand immediate international action on climate reparations and a full, fast, and fair phase-out of fossil fuels; and urge world leaders to treat every new oil, gas, and coal approval as an active violation of human rights and international law.

In the fall of 2004, the Republican National Convention was set to occur in New York at Madison Square Garden where the Republicans would nominate Bush and Cheney for their second term. Thousands marched to protest the Bush regime and the U.S. wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Moni, whose husband is targeted by the post 9/11 Special Registration program gives a powerful speech at the protest demanding justice for all immigrants and that Bush and Ashcroft “GO HOME!”
