🌈 In first grade, the letters of the alphabet come to life through stories, imagination, and art.

Before children encounter letters as abstract symbols, they experience them through rich stories and create their own beautiful crayon drawings. Gradually, the forms of the letters emerge from these pictures: *B* from a Bear, *T* from a Tower, *W* from the rolling Waves. Through these images, children discover the relationship between the shape of a letter and the sound it represents.

As the alphabet begins to take its place on the first grade classroom walls, Ms. Simmons is preserving these vivid, sensory-rich images alongside each letter, just as the children have drawn them in their own books.

Whether a child is already reading and writing or just beginning to discover the alphabet, these pictures keep the letters rooted in something meaningful and alive. Rather than remaining abstract symbols to memorize, the letters carry with them the stories, sounds, and images through which the children first came to know them.

This is one of the beautiful ways Waldorf education brings imagination and artistic experience into the foundations of literacy. 🌿✨

🧶☕ Join fellow parents every Thursday from 8:15–11:30am for Crafts & Tea - a cozy gathering where creativity and community come together. No crafting experience is needed! We provide the supplies, ideas, and guidance, so you can simply show up, sip tea, and enjoy the process.

The crafts we create are donated to the school and featured at our seasonal festivals, where they’re sold or included in the silent auction. It’s a meaningful way to contribute to our children’s celebrations while connecting with other parents in a relaxed, welcoming space.

Come for the tea, stay for the friendships, and leave knowing you’ve added something special to our community.✨

✨On Tuesday our 7th graders experienced the “surprise” element of their Creative Writing block in a very literal way!

The girls arrived at school knowing only that they were leaving campus. After a morning of guessing, singing, and anticipation, they discovered their destination: a 12-acre corn maze. They spent the morning exploring, navigating, laughing, and sharing snacks and hot chocolate around a fire.

In Waldorf education, creative writing grows from the students’ own experiences, observations, and rich sensory impressions. Rather than beginning with a blank page and simply asking students to “make something up,” we give them experiences that awaken their senses, imagination, and inner pictures - and then invite them to transform those experiences into words.

This afternoon, the girls returned to the classroom and began drawing on the sights, sounds, smells, feelings, and small moments of the morning as they developed their own pieces of writing.

A day of surprise became a day of experience, imagination, and story. 🌽✨

🌿✨ Our 7th grade class had a hands-on astronomy experience with a 2 night field trip to Bainbridge Island.

As part of their astronomy block, students traveled to Battle Point Observatory, where an astronomer gave them a lesson and answered their questions before heading outside for a star party. With beautiful weather and clear skies, students used special telescopes to get an up-close look at the Moon and its craters and were even able to see Venus.

The astronomer also pointed out many of the constellations they had been learning about, bringing their classroom studies to life as they looked up at the night sky together. 🔭🌟

🌿3rd grade’s sukkah is up!🌿

The kids had a blast working alongside a few parents and Mr. Bill to raise the sukkah. Once the walls were up, they gathered fallen branches from the recent windstorm to create the roof - and then added their own creative touches by decorating the sukkah.

The best part? Sitting down for their very first lunch in their newly built and decorated sukkah!

A huge thank-you to our parent volunteer for creating such a wonderful design for the students to build together. 🍂

🌎✨ One of the traditional blocks taught in Grade 8 is the Revolutions Block. Students consider the leaders of revolutions as different as the American, French, Haitian, and Spanish American revolutions and notice the common dreams and aspirations - called Enlightenment ideals by some - that inspired individuals to risk everything.

Of course, the War of Independence was fought not only by those who signed up to go into battle, but also by those drawn into the conflict by circumstances. The generic nickname “Molly Pitcher” was given to women who carried pitchers of water to soldiers in the field but who all-too-often found themselves manning the cannons, so to speak, when there was no one else available. The legend of Molly Pitcher was inspired by more than one real-life heroine: two of these were Mary Ludwig Hays and Margaret Corbin.🌟📚
