Today at Circle of Purpose at Shadow Hills High School, Kirk Scott brought up that old saying, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” How many of us learned to act tough even when somebody’s words stuck with us?
Kirk reminded us that mental health and mental fortitude are two different things. We can have the strength to keep going and still need to be honest about what hurts. Jesus desires wholeness for us, and that includes what’s going on in our minds. 2 Corinthians 10:5 calls us to take our thoughts captive and bring them into obedience to Christ. When somebody’s words start shaping how you see yourself, pause and ask, “Does that line up with what God says about me?”
Kirk left us with a question worth sitting with. Am I waiting for my circumstances to change before I let myself have peace and joy? In Romans 5:3–5, Paul reminds us that suffering can produce perseverance, perseverance builds character, and character leads to hope. With Jesus, we can experience peace and joy even while we’re waiting for things to change. We may not know what tomorrow holds, but we know who will walk through it with us. 🙏🏾
Thank you, Kirk, for pouring into our Shadow Hills students today!
