Dear Friend of SOS,
I hope this note finds you well and staying positive. I know it seems like a remake of the sci-fi thriller “The Andromeda Strain”, and we’re all longing for the day we can return to life as we knew it before this nasty bug hit our shores. With the Marine Corps base on lockdown, you might think that SOS has been idle; on the contrary, we have simply turned our sights toward helping our Veterans while the active-duty Marines cool their heels. A core group of active volunteers have been keeping busy by helping Veterans in need with running errands, grocery shopping, light cleaning, picking up prescriptions, or simply checking in to make sure he or she has everything needed. In fact, if you know of someone in need, whether it means bringing a bouquet of flowers (gloved and masked, for sure), or a Veteran who needs household items like kitchen appliances or furniture, please nominate that person and we’ll do what we can to help. Despite the majority of our volunteers being Seniors, they are a dynamic bunch, and sitting around in their Lazy Boys is not an option! We know that our Marines will be ready to travel at a moment’s notice once their quarantine is over, so we need to be ready for what is sure to be a major push for the July 4 Holiday (if they get the go ahead). That means that we’ll need to have funds on hand to pay for insurance, gas, and maintenance for our minivan, which is currently in sick bay. All non-profits are hurting because of this economic shutdown, and it is difficult asking people who are laid-off to contribute, so we have to be creative, yet sensitive to their plight when fundraising. Our next golf fundraiser is postponed until September 24 (which happens to be my birthday!), so in the meantime, I am putting together a Go Fund Me page, that I hope you will share with everyone you know. My goal is to generate at least $5,000, but with your help promoting it, perhaps we can surpass that figure?! It has often been said, “When times get tough, the tough get going” and that’s exactly what SOS is doing. The demand for transportation will be huge once this pandemic is behind us, so we need to be ready, willing and able to pick up right where we left off. As always, I appreciate each and every one of you, and I look forward to seeing many of your smiling faces once we can get back to the business of moving Marines!
Stay well, and be safe!
