Truly Never Forgotten.

We have to remember all those that have given their lives for our freedom not just on Memorial Day !

We owe these brave young men and women in service so much more than just one day of reflection !

Forever Grateful for our Freedoms and the Sacrifices made for our country!

Dear Friend of SOS,

I hope this note finds you well and staying positive. I know it seems like a remake of the sci-fi thriller “The Andromeda Strain”, and we’re all longing for the day we can return to life as we knew it before this nasty bug hit our shores. With the Marine Corps base on lockdown, you might think that SOS has been idle; on the contrary, we have simply turned our sights toward helping our Veterans while the active-duty Marines cool their heels. A core group of active volunteers have been keeping busy by helping Veterans in need with running errands, grocery shopping, light cleaning, picking up prescriptions, or simply checking in to make sure he or she has everything needed. In fact, if you know of someone in need, whether it means bringing a bouquet of flowers (gloved and masked, for sure), or a Veteran who needs household items like kitchen appliances or furniture, please nominate that person and we’ll do what we can to help. Despite the majority of our volunteers being Seniors, they are a dynamic bunch, and sitting around in their Lazy Boys is not an option! We know that our Marines will be ready to travel at a moment’s notice once their quarantine is over, so we need to be ready for what is sure to be a major push for the July 4 Holiday (if they get the go ahead). That means that we’ll need to have funds on hand to pay for insurance, gas, and maintenance for our minivan, which is currently in sick bay. All non-profits are hurting because of this economic shutdown, and it is difficult asking people who are laid-off to contribute, so we have to be creative, yet sensitive to their plight when fundraising. Our next golf fundraiser is postponed until September 24 (which happens to be my birthday!), so in the meantime, I am putting together a Go Fund Me page, that I hope you will share with everyone you know. My goal is to generate at least $5,000, but with your help promoting it, perhaps we can surpass that figure?! It has often been said, “When times get tough, the tough get going” and that’s exactly what SOS is doing. The demand for transportation will be huge once this pandemic is behind us, so we need to be ready, willing and able to pick up right where we left off. As always, I appreciate each and every one of you, and I look forward to seeing many of your smiling faces once we can get back to the business of moving Marines!

Stay well, and be safe!

S.O.S. MAKES AN APPEAL FOR WHEELS

“Desert Lexus and Omni Rancho Las Palmas team up to Drive ‘em Home”!

(Palm Desert, CA) May 6, 2019: S.O.S. is a 501c(3) charity which
provides “no cost” transportation from the Palm Springs and Ontario
Airports, to the USMC Base in 29 Palms, CA. These free rides for
active-duty military personnel and their family members are made
possible through generous, tax-deductible donations from individuals
and corporate patrons. Volunteers drive one of to minivans or their
own vehicles and donate their time and energy to provide “A Ride Home”
for our brave USMC servicemen and women.

After 11+ years of transporting in excess of 274,000 United States
Marines, and traveling nearly 15 million miles, without incident, SOS
has suffered a serious setback.

S.O.S. Founding Director, Erica Stone explains, “One of our two
minivans used to transport larger numbers of Marines, was involved in
a major accident, and has been totaled by our insurance company.
Luckily, no one was seriously injured in the collision, but the loss
of this newer of the two vehicles has put us in a precarious
position”. She added, “The absence of this vehicle will seriously
impact our ability to fulfill our mission, particularly because nearly
half of our volunteer drivers are snowbirds who leave the Desert with
their larger vehicles. Even though the number of our available drivers
is cut in half, demand for transportation remains constant. Without
the use of our second minivan, we may have to deny transportation to
some of our American Heroes”.

Recognizing what S.O.S. has done for active-duty Marines and Valley
Veterans, Desert Lexus and the Omni Rancho Las Palmas Resort have
teamed up to sponsor a benefit golf tournament to help S.O.S. reach
it’s goal. On Monday, May 27, a 4-person scramble will be held at Omni
Rancho Las Palmas Country Club, and all proceeds will go towards
acquiring a new minivan for S.O.S. Check-in is at 7:00am, with a
shotgun start at 8:00am. The $60 entry fee includes greens fees, cart,
lunch, and prizes, including a “Hole in One” contest sponsored by
Desert Lexus. For non-golfers, lunch is only $25. Door prizes will
also be offered. For information on the golf tournament call Jennifer
760-834-2179. For information about donating to this worthwhile
charity, please call (760) 799-5488. You can also donate by visiting
their website at www.sosride.org.

S.O.S. is appealing to other Coachella Valley patriots, charitable
foundations, philanthropists, and other businesses to help them
procure a suitable replacement vehicle. Unfortunately, the insurance
settlement is not nearly enough to cover replacement costs.
