The Trump administration is selling thousands of federally protected wild horses - and some are ending up in the slaughter pipeline, a New York Times investigation found.

The Interior Department’s Bureau of Land Management rounds up mustangs to control wild populations. With 58,000 horses in government holding facilities costing $100 million a year, it’s selling more to cut costs. Sales more than doubled in 2025, to 3,700.

Here’s the loophole: Once sold, horses lose federal protections. Buyers agree not to slaughter them or knowingly sell them for slaughter. But they can resell them to middlemen, who can legally send them to slaughter.

Every other form of life participates in the balance of the ecosystems that sustain it. Forests regenerate themselves. Rivers follow natural cycles. Animals take what they need and remain connected to the rhythms that shaped them. Humanity alone has developed the remarkable ability to imagine itself as separate from the very systems that make its existence possible.

Yet every breath depends on forests and oceans. Every meal begins with soil, sunlight, water, and countless living organisms working together. Every atom in the human body has traveled through stars, planets, and living systems long before becoming part of us. The deeper science explores life, the more it reveals relationships rather than separation.

The illusion of independence has led us to believe that nature is something outside ourselves, something to manage or control rather than something we fundamentally are. Every imbalance we create eventually returns because we are participating in the same living system we affect.

Remembering that we are part of nature changes the way we see the world. The Earth is not the place where life happens. It is the living network through which we exist. Caring for nature ultimately becomes an expression of understanding our own place within it.
