After three years of dedicated service, the Greenways Foundation extends our gratitude to Executive Director Khepri Hazel as she departs our organization.

During her tenure, Khepri helped strengthen Greenways Foundation's impact across Indiana by expanding partnerships with organizations throughout the state, creating new opportunities to advance trail connectivity, accessibility, and quality of place for Hoosiers.

Among her many accomplishments, she led the growth of the Indiana Trails Advocates Coalition (ITAC), building a statewide network of more than 400 advocates committed to advancing trails and active transportation throughout Indiana. Her collaborative leadership helped bring together communities, nonprofits, government agencies, and industry partners around a shared vision for a more connected Indiana.

We appreciate Khepri's leadership, dedication, and passion for Indiana's trails and the communities they serve. Please join us in thanking her for her many contributions and wishing her every success in her new role.

Today, we say thank you and farewell to our incredible intern, Braxtyn Cooper, as she wraps up an entire year with our team.

Braxtyn joined us during her senior year at Purdue University, where she is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and a Bachelor of Science in Natural Resources & Environmental Science with a concentration in Climate and Energy Solutions.

She began her time with us as our Community Outreach Intern, helping spread the word about our foundation and our mission. Thanks to her dedication and creativity, we doubled the number of communities we reached each year.

Later, Braxtyn transitioned into the role of Fund Development Intern, where she helped identify potential sponsors for our Trails Celebration and supported research into policies and procedures for a prospective endowment. Her work strengthened our efforts to build a sustainable future for the foundation.

Beyond her internship roles, Braxtyn made lasting contributions to our advocacy work. She conducted valuable research on 2025 HB 1616, which called for a study on the economic value of public recreation land, and helped develop the case we presented before the Interim Study Committee. She also researched federal and comparable state trails legislation, providing insights into how Indiana can reclaim its position as a national leader in trails. Most recently, she has contributed to the upcoming publication of Your Voice on the Trail, our advocacy guide for Hoosiers.

Braxtyn's curiosity, thoughtfulness, and commitment to our mission have made a meaningful impact on our organization and the communities we serve. We are deeply grateful for the time, talent, and passion she shared with us over the past year.

Thank you, Braxtyn, for everything you've accomplished. We can't wait to see all that you achieve next, and we wish you every success in the future! 🌳🎯📣💯💫🍀

As you consider your charitable giving, don't overlook the importance of investing in quality of place.

Indiana's trails need your support now more than ever. While trails received $180 million in state funding between 2019 and 2025, that funding met only 42% of the statewide need—and it was dedicated primarily to building new trails, not maintaining or improving the thousands of miles of trails we already have.

When you support Greenways Foundation, you're doing more than funding projects. You're helping activate a growing statewide advocacy network that works at the community, county, state, and federal levels to expand investment in trails and ensure they remain safe, accessible, and connected.

Every Hoosier deserves access to outdoor spaces that strengthen health, improve quality of life, connect communities, and drive local economic growth. Together, we can ensure Indiana's trail network continues to thrive for generations to come.

As financial resources tighten, donors’ attention naturally turns to what feels most immediate: food, housing and health, for example. That can leave parks, trails, public spaces and neighborhood beautification feeling secondary or, even worse, indulgent.
While that is understandable, it is short-sighted. A growing body of research demonstrates that easy access to well-maintained public spaces improves a host of major social outcomes. That means investment today prevents and reduces crises in the future.
For nonprofits and funders alike, the opportunity is to think about these investments as basic parts of a healthy society. Because rather than distracting from the necessities, a strong quality of place is one.

🚲 Indianapolis Cultural Trail Generates $3 Billion in Economic Value, New Report Finds

As the Indianapolis Cultural Trail celebrates its 20th year, a newly released impact report highlights just how transformative the Trail has become for Indianapolis.

According to the report, the 10-mile urban trail has generated more than $3 billion in assessed property value since opening in 2007, supporting local government services while fueling growth across downtown. The population living near the Trail has increased at five times the city's average rate, and retail space along the corridor has expanded by 39%.

Today, the Trail welcomes more than one million users each year for transportation, recreation, and exploring downtown. Nearly half of downtown residents now live within a three-minute walk of the Trail, and businesses continue to benefit from increased foot traffic and economic activity.

The report also points to significant future potential, estimating that underdeveloped land along the Trail could generate an additional $1.4 billion in value through future investment.

Beyond its economic impact, the Cultural Trail has become an internationally recognized model for urban design, connecting neighborhoods through public art, greenspace, and multimodal transportation while remaining free and accessible to everyone.

As the Trail enters its next chapter, leaders are shifting their focus toward long-term stewardship, expanded programming, public art, and ensuring this nationally recognized community asset continues to thrive for generations to come.
