Being a parent is hard enough on its own. Now imagine doing it while also trying to hold down a job, keep a roof over your head, and unlearn everything you were taught about what stability or safety was even supposed to look like.

That's the reality for a lot of the young parents we work with. Many of them are raising kids without ever having had a steady example to follow themselves. So alongside the day-to-day of work and housing, they're doing harder things like finding purpose, deciding which parts of what they grew up with they want to carry forward, and which parts they're choosing to leave behind.

Thankfully, our coaches help them with this. Along with our new Mental Health program, we aim to help youth name the patterns they inherited and build something different for themselves and for their kids.

If you're a parent, you know how much it takes just to keep everything moving. Picture doing that while also rewriting the whole blueprint.

Drop a ❤️ in the comments to support brave parents doing exactly that.

Most of us keep our Social Security card in a drawer and never think about it.

For a young person experiencing homelessness, not having one can create major roadblocks:

• Applying for a job
• Opening a bank account
• Getting housed

Many people don't consider that losing housing often means losing paperwork too. Without a Social Security card, birth certificate, or state ID, each of those gets stuck at step one.

That's where our Resource Services team comes in. Staff sit down with each young person to figure out which documents are missing. Then they help with the applications, track down the backup paperwork, and get them to the right office.

Once they have their documents, a young person can apply for that job, sign that lease, and start building something of their own.

Replacing an ID is just one of the ways we help young people get back on their feet. See everything our Resource Services team does at outreachindiana.org/services

What would starting from ground zero look like if your resources were gone too?

For a lot of the young people we work with, that question is not hypothetical. Youth like, Chyeanne, often have no home, no savings, and little to no family to call when things get hard. They are doing the work of rebuilding a life from nothing, while still showing up for a job, or school, or people who depend on them.

Outreach isn't here to do the work for them. We're here so they don't have to do it completely alone.

Because youth shouldn't have to experience starting over, and they definitely shouldn't have to do it alone. Drop a ❤️ in the comments if you agree.

Getting housed is HUGE, but...

For a lot of young people, moving into their own apartment is honestly one of the biggest days of their life. But learning how to keep a job, manage a budget, and build a routine takes time; especially after years of not knowing where you'd sleep next. Believe it or not, even feeling safe and settled can feel strange when you're used to staying on guard.

That's why Outreach sticks around for the whole process. We're there before someone's housed, building the skills and relationships that make it stick, and we're there after too, with coaching, budgeting help, and mental health support along the way.

Housing is a huge milestone. But we want to be there for everything that comes before it and everything that comes after. Because getting a roof over your head is important, but so is all the other stuff.

According to the January 2025 Point-in-Time Count conducted by CHIP Indianapolis: out of 1,815 people counted that night, 450 were young people under 25.

This number is disheartening to sit with, and yet, it still doesn't capture the true scope of youth homelessness in our city. Many young people go uncounted altogether, staying in situations like couch-surfing, doubled up with a friend's family, or in motels, situations that don't fit how this kind of count works.

This is exactly why Outreach exists: to find and support the young people this picture so often leaves out

We decided we don't say thank you enough... to our youth.

To every young person who has walked through our doors at Outreach, whether for a meal, a shower, a place to catch your breath, or somewhere to figure out your next step, thank you for trusting us to be a part of this chapter with you.

You've taught our staff what real courage looks like, what it means to keep going when giving up is easier, and what hope looks like when it's lived out day by day.

We see you, we believe in you, and we're endlessly grateful to be part of your story, however small our part may be.

Drop a ❤️ in the comments for all of our youth.

This year we housed our second family in the Outreach duplex, but 30 years ago, the only mission was connecting with unhoused youth throughout Indianapolis.

The people who are running Outreach today are not the same ones who started it out of the back of a minivan. But one thing remains the same, and that is the heart behind what we do.

In January 2025, 1,815 people were counted experiencing homelessness in Indianapolis by CHIP Indianapolis.

That same year, Outreach estimated around 7,800 youth and young adults experiencing homelessness across our city over the course of the year.

The gap between those numbers comes down to the fact that unhoused youth don't often get tallied as homeless, because they are seeking shelter elsewhere.

Often unhoused youth can be found couch-surfing, doubled up with a friend's family, or staying in motels temporarily.

Today we want to encourage you to remember that numbers like these are important, and that sometimes they aren't telling the full story of where unhoused youth really are.
